The United Nations Information Centre in Panama City (UNIC Panama City) is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs). Established to promote public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations, UNIC Panama City serves as the principal source of information about the UN system in Panama. The organization is dedicated to disseminating UN information materials to local audiences in multiple languages, engaging with local and regional partners, and enhancing the visibility of the UN's work. Since the operationalization of the United Nations development system reform on January 1, 2019, UNIC Panama City has been integrated with the Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Panama, which has further strengthened its role in raising awareness of the UN's initiatives, particularly in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for Panama 2026-2031.

Job Overview:
The Communications Officer position is critical for designing and implementing a comprehensive UN communications strategy that aligns with both global and local strategic communications goals. The incumbent will be responsible for developing a workplan that includes campaigns and activities aimed at engaging local audiences with UN priorities. This role involves monitoring and reporting on public information activities, ensuring that communications efforts are effective and resonate with the target audience. The officer will also focus on promoting information integrity in Panama, addressing issues related to misinformation and disinformation that could impact the UN's reputation. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including the RCO Data and Monitoring Officer, to draft annual reports and develop outreach strategies. The officer will create digital content assets, cover high-level events, and maintain UN communications channels to ensure timely and engaging content that adheres to UN branding guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communications Officer will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
  • Developing an agreed UN Panama Communications Strategy and workplan that aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework of Panama 2026-203
  • Monitoring mis/disinformation trends in Panama and developing a UN joint response protocol based on crisis communications guidance.
  • Supporting the drafting of the UNSDCF annual report in collaboration with the RCO Data and Monitoring Officer.
  • Creating at least 10 digital content assets per month, including infographics and visuals for UN events.
  • Providing coverage for at least 4 high-level events and meetings per month, producing news articles and content for various media outlets.
  • Maintaining UN communications channels with timely and accurate content.
  • Providing communication support to the RC/RCO and coordinating the work of the UN Communications Group.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of five years of experience in communication is required, with a focus on writing for web and social media or mass media. Proven experience in developing digital content and graphic design is essential, including proficiency in tools such as Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, and CapCut. Candidates should also have experience in capturing and editing high-quality photographs during events, ensuring alignment with communication goals. Fluency in Microsoft Office programs is required, and previous experience with UN agencies or similar international organizations is desirable.

Educational Background:
A first-level university degree in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field is mandatory for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for effective communication and engagement with diverse audiences.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in communication, particularly in writing for web and social media or mass media. Candidates should have a strong track record of developing digital content and graphic design, as well as experience in managing communications for high-profile events and initiatives.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish, both written and spoken, is required for this position, along with excellent English language skills. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
