Job Overview: The internship is located in the Environment Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva. The UNECE Environment Division plays a crucial role in facilitating cooperation among member states to achieve sustainable development goals. The intern will contribute to the preparation of Environmental Performance Reviews (EPR) for various countries, support the Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP), and assist in environmental monitoring and assessment initiatives. This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about environmental issues and eager to gain practical experience in international relations and environmental policy.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Programme Manager of the Environmental Performance Review Programme (EPR). Key responsibilities include: (a) Assisting in the preparation of the fourth EPR of Uzbekistan and the EPRs of Antigua and Barbuda, as well as the publication of the 4th EPR of Montenegro; (b) Supporting the Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP) by drafting documents and communication materials, and aiding in the implementation of decisions from the Steering Committee; (c) Providing support to the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Programme, including follow-up on recommendations from pan-European assessments and assisting in the organization of webinars and training materials; (d) Promoting UNECE guidelines for environmental indicators; (e) Offering general assistance such as drafting and editing documents, conducting background research, and managing correspondence.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, candidates must be computer literate in standard software applications, have a strong interest in the work of the United Nations, and demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a background in environmental policy, law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">environmental law, environmental sciences, international relations, or a related field. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of environmental issues and the role of international organizations in addressing them.
Experience: No professional work experience is required for participation in the Internship Programme. However, candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals. This internship is particularly suited for students or recent graduates looking to gain practical experience in the field of environmental policy and international relations.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. A working knowledge of French or Russian is considered an asset, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the organization.
