Job Overview: The Senior Economic Affairs Officer will play a crucial role in shaping the economic strategy for Yemen, particularly in the context of the ongoing political process. The incumbent will be responsible for formulating economic policies that support the political process, conducting extensive economic analysis, and leading a team of economists. The role involves significant travel, including to Yemen, to engage with various stakeholders and to implement economic strategies effectively. The officer will also be expected to prepare reports, speeches, and presentations on economic issues, ensuring that the economic track of the mediation efforts is well-coordinated and supported.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
Establishing a comprehensive political strategy to address Yemen's economic challenges.
Formulating economic policies in collaboration with international financial institutions and member states.
Leading the collection and analysis of economic data and managing economic programs.
Identifying emerging economic issues and designing programs to address them.
Supervising a team of economists and commissioning external economic studies.
Preparing and finalizing reports and presentations for senior staff.
Coordinating political outreach strategies related to economic issues.
Advising on cross-border economic projects and negotiating with international financial institutions.
Attending to administrative matters concerning the organizational unit.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in economics, with a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in economic policy-making, academia, or foreign assistance programs. Experience in the Middle East and collaboration with international financial institutions is highly desirable. Candidates should have a proven track record of advising on economic issues during political negotiations and experience in senior-level positions within UN or large multilateral organizations.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of ten years of relevant experience, particularly in applying economic principles in various contexts. Candidates should have experience in advising on economic issues during political negotiations and working with member states and international organizations. A minimum of five years of senior-level experience in planning and coordinating development or humanitarian financing is desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is required, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations. A working knowledge of Arabic is desirable, which would enhance communication and collaboration in the region.
