Job Overview:
The Social Media Intern will join the Regional Information Management and Public Information team in Amman, Jordan, and will work in a hybrid modality that includes both in-person and remote work. The intern will play a crucial role in supporting digital communications and social media engagement for OCHA. Under the guidance of the Humanitarian Affairs Officer (Public Information and Reporting Officer), the intern will be responsible for developing content for OCHA's social media platforms, ensuring that it aligns with organizational guidance and policies. This position requires creativity and an understanding of digital audiences, as the intern will assist in crafting social media posts, captions, and content briefs in both English and Arabic. The intern will also support translation efforts, monitor social media performance, and maintain an editorial calendar to identify key campaign opportunities and humanitarian anniversaries. The role is designed for individuals who are passionate about humanitarian affairs and digital communications, particularly within the context of the Middle East region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Social Media Intern will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
  • Developing engaging content for OCHA's social media platforms in accordance with established guidelines and policies.
  • Assisting in the copywriting and design of social media posts, captions, and content briefs tailored for digital audiences in both English and Arabic.
  • Supporting the translation of social media content and public information materials, including briefings, stories, news articles, and video captions.
  • Collaborating with social media focal points across the region to enhance outreach efforts.
  • Monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on social media performance metrics such as reach, engagement, and trends, and assisting in the preparation of analytics dashboards and summary reports.
  • Maintaining and updating a social media editorial calendar, identifying key events, milestones, and humanitarian anniversaries for campaign opportunities.
  • Conducting social media environment scans to analyze platform trends, hashtags, and audience behavior in the MENA region, and providing recommendations for improving outreach and engagement.
  • Performing other relevant duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Communications, Mass Media, Digital Media, Journalism, International Relations, Social Sciences, Humanities, Middle Eastern Studies, or a related field; or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the aforementioned fields. While professional work experience is not required for this internship, familiarity with social media management tools and visual design software (such as Canva or Adobe Suite) is essential. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate familiarity with major social media platforms in the MENA region and possess strong writing skills to create compelling short-form content for social media.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes either a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as Communications, Mass Media, Digital Media, Journalism, International Relations, Social Sciences, Humanities, Middle Eastern Studies, or Languages. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of digital communications and humanitarian outreach.

Experience:
While the internship does not require prior professional work experience, applicants should have a strong academic background in relevant fields. Familiarity with social media management tools and an understanding of digital communications are highly desirable. The internship is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to humanitarian efforts through effective communication strategies.

Languages:
Fluency in reading, speaking, understanding, and writing in English and Arabic is required for this internship. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in these languages will enable the intern to effectively engage with diverse audiences and contribute to OCHA's communication efforts.
