Job Overview: The Environmental Policy Specialist position is designed to support the UNDP's efforts in implementing environmental policies and strategies that align with sustainable development goals. Duties and Responsibilities: The Environmental Policy Specialist will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to: conducting thorough analyses of existing environmental policies and regulations; developing new policy proposals that address current environmental challenges; collaborating with government officials and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of environmental initiatives; preparing detailed reports and presentations on policy recommendations; facilitating workshops and training sessions to enhance stakeholder understanding of environmental issues; monitoring and evaluating the impact of environmental policies and programs; providing technical assistance and guidance to project teams; and representing UNDP in relevant meetings and conferences to advocate for sustainable environmental practices.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in environmental science, policy analysis, or a related field. The ideal candidate should have excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for engaging with diverse stakeholders and fostering collaborative relationships. Familiarity with international environmental agreements and frameworks is highly desirable, as is experience in project management and implementation.
Educational Background: A master's degree in environmental science, public policy, sustainable development, or a related field is required for this position. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline may be considered if they have significant relevant experience. Additional certifications or training in environmental management or policy analysis will be considered an asset.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in environmental policy development, analysis, or management. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or NGOs on environmental issues is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to environmental sustainability, particularly in the context of developing countries.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNDP. Proficiency in Portuguese is highly desirable, given the location of the position in Cape Verde. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those spoken in the region, would be considered an advantage.
