Job Overview:
The UN News Stringer (Chinese) position is designed to enhance the UN's storytelling capabilities by producing and submitting multimedia content in the Chinese language. The role involves creating a maximum of ten approved packages of content that reflect local voices and field-based narratives related to UN activities, particularly focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), human rights, and climate issues. The successful candidate will work closely with the relevant Unit Chief to brainstorm and finalize story ideas, ensuring that the produced content aligns with UN priorities and resonates with the target audience. This position is expected to last for a maximum of six months, with the potential for content production in various locations, including China, Asia Pacific, or Europe.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Individual Contractor will be responsible for a range of duties, including:
  • Liaising with the relevant Unit Chief to discuss and plan the production of quality multimedia content that aligns with UN priorities.
  • Pitching story ideas and agreeing on timelines and content to be produced, utilizing various storytelling approaches suitable for news and social media platforms.
  • Researching content from credible sources, writing stories and scripts, and creating multimedia stories that feature local angles and focus on beneficiaries and target audiences.
  • Coordinating technical arrangements and organizing interviews in the assigned countries as necessary.
  • Adhering to UN News guidelines to ensure editorial clarity and sound political judgment, including obtaining necessary permissions and copyright approvals for multimedia content.
  • Demonstrating well-rounded experience in broadcast/digital journalism and multimedia production, with a strong emphasis on video production skills.
  • Providing references and work samples upon request, and ensuring compliance with any registration or accreditation requirements set by national/local authorities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with a first-level university degree in communication, journalism, video production, or a related field being desirable. A minimum of two years of experience in broadcast/digital journalism in the assigned language(s) is required, along with experience in producing multimedia features. Familiarity with video production, filming, and editing is highly desirable, as is experience in recording and editing audio material. Additionally, candidates should have experience in digital content publishing and the incorporation of photos and graphics into their work.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent as a minimum requirement. A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, video production, or a related field is preferred and would enhance a candidate's suitability for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of experience in broadcast or digital journalism, specifically in the assigned language(s). Candidates should have a comprehensive understanding of multimedia production processes, including the full range of production for multimedia features, as well as experience in video production, filming, and editing. Experience in audio recording and editing, as well as digital content publishing, is also essential.

Languages:
Fluency in Chinese is mandatory for this position, as the primary content will be produced in this language. Knowledge of English and other UN official languages is desirable, as the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat include English and French.
