Job Overview: The Junior Communications Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the communications and advocacy strategies of UN Women in Kenya. Reporting to the Communications Unit Team Leader, the consultant will be responsible for enhancing the visibility and awareness of UN Women among partners, the media, and the public. This position requires a client-oriented approach and involves providing technical assistance to ensure high-quality outreach and documentation of UN Women’s work. The consultant will assist in developing and implementing communication strategies and advocacy initiatives, focusing on digital communication, event coverage, content management, and knowledge sharing. The role is vital for promoting gender equality and women's empowerment through effective communication.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Junior Communications Consultant will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including managing and maintaining UN Women Kenya's social media platforms, ensuring the dissemination of timely and engaging content. The consultant will support the creation of multimedia content, monitor digital performance metrics, and provide on-the-ground support for events, including live social media coverage and media liaison. Responsibilities also include capturing and editing high-quality images and videos, developing visually compelling designs for various communication materials, and establishing a comprehensive online repository for knowledge management. The consultant will contribute to advocacy campaigns, assist in drafting newsletters and success stories, and provide training to team members on social media best practices. Additionally, the consultant will be involved in organizing webinars and collaborative platforms to foster a culture of learning and information exchange.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. They should have at least one year of progressively responsible experience in supporting the formulation and implementation of internal and external communications and advocacy strategies. Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Office, web-based management systems, and Adobe design software is essential. Experience in social media and digital communications is also required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong multimedia skills and knowledge of gender equality and women's empowerment in Kenya.
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the necessary foundation for understanding communication strategies and advocacy initiatives, which are critical for the role.
Experience: The position requires at least one year of progressively responsible experience in communications and advocacy. This experience should include support for the formulation and implementation of communication strategies, as well as familiarity with digital communications and social media platforms. Candidates should have a proven track record of producing high-quality communication materials and engaging with diverse audiences.
Languages: Fluency in English and Kiswahili is mandatory for this position. A working knowledge of another UN official language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a multilingual environment.
Additional Notes: This position is full-time and involves working closely with various stakeholders within UN Women and the broader UN system. The consultant will be expected to adhere to UN Women’s policies and procedures, including a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations.
