Job Overview:
The Data Science Assistant position is located within the Chief Digital Office (CDO) of UNEP, specifically in the AI, Data Science and Applications Group. This role is pivotal in supporting UNEP's digital transformation efforts by providing high-quality, policy-relevant environmental data products and services. The Data Science Assistant will work closely with various internal clients, including programs, regional offices, and Multilateral Environmental Agreement (MEA) secretariats, to leverage data science and analytics solutions. The incumbent will assist in the preparation of data sets, design and development of data products, and provide training to clients on data usage and standards. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to delivering results that align with UNEP's mission of promoting sustainable development through sound environmental practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Data Science Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: assisting with the preparation of input for data source exploration and acquisition; supporting internal clients in leveraging data science and analytics solutions; preparing input for the design and development of data products such as dashboards and analytical workflows; providing client training and developing tools to enhance client capabilities; customizing visualization products to present analysis findings; preparing and cleaning data sets; maintaining and updating web pages and dashboards related to CDO data assets; collaborating with data engineers to ensure data products are well-documented and ready for deployment; and performing other duties as assigned by the scientist" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Data Scientist or Chief Digital Officer.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with additional training in Data Analysis and Engineering being required. A strong understanding of data science tools, statistical programming languages, and visualization techniques is essential. The ability to analyze diverse data sets and resolve discrepancies is crucial, along with a commitment to gender equality and professionalism in the workplace. Candidates should demonstrate effective planning and organizational skills, client orientation, and technological awareness, keeping abreast of relevant technologies and their applications in the workplace.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a high school diploma or equivalent. However, additional training in Data Analysis and Engineering is mandatory. Candidates with a first-level university degree or higher may have their minimum experience requirement reduced, indicating a preference for candidates with advanced educational qualifications.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of relevant working experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management, or a related area is required. For candidates with a first-level university degree or higher, the minimum experience requirement is reduced to three years. Experience in supporting digital/data projects, particularly in data preparation, visualization, or dashboarding, in an international or multi-location setting is highly desirable.

Languages:
English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations Secretariat, and proficiency in French is considered an asset, although not mandatory for this position.

The appointment for this position is for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on the continued existence of the mandate and availability of funding. This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work in Kenya.
