Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is based in the Quality Assurance Section of UNEP's Policy and Programme Division (PPD), which is recognized as a center of excellence for strategic guidance and programmatic policy. The intern will work under the overall supervision of the Gender Programme Management Officer and the day-to-day supervision of the Gender Associate Officer. The role involves supporting the implementation of the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 and 10, as well as engaging in various activities related to gender and environmental safeguards. The intern will conduct research, participate in discussions, and contribute insights on key topics, while also assisting in the planning and coordination of meetings and events with partners. This position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic international organization focused on environmental issues and gender inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting the Quality Assurance Section in implementing the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy and relevant SDGs, organizing capacity strengthening workshops, youth-related activities, and other QA activities.
  • Conducting research and summarizing key developments related to gender and environmental safeguards.
  • Participating in group discussions and providing insights on mainstreaming gender and safeguards.
  • Assisting with planning and coordinating meetings and events with partners, including UN Observances.
  • Analyzing and monitoring the use of gender and safeguards information on UNEP's platforms.
  • Drafting impact stories and messages for UNEP's digital platforms.
  • Supporting the monitoring and analysis of information on the Open Data Portal and preparing draft reports.
  • Contributing to community practice and capacity strengthening workshops, including preparations for presentations and analysis of findings.
  • Preparing various presentations using software like PowerPoint and Canva. 1
  • Performing other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Gender Studies, Human Rights, Sociology, Environmental Science, Sustainable Development, or a related field. Coursework in areas such as gender studies, environmental and social impact assessment, impact measurement, community health and safety, Indigenous rights, disability rights, and poverty analysis is essential. Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school program or in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level). b) Have graduated with a university degree and must commence the internship within one year of graduation. Professional work experience is not required, but a relevant field of study is necessary.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes a university degree in a relevant field such as Gender Studies, Human Rights, Sociology, Environmental Science, or Sustainable Development. Candidates should have completed coursework in gender studies, environmental and social impact assessment, and related areas. Applicants must be either enrolled in a graduate program or have recently graduated, with proof of enrollment or graduation required at the time of application.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not mandatory for this internship, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in issues related to gender, social safeguards, and environmental safeguards. Experience or interest in working with the Leave No One Behind (LNOB) initiative and gender and social intersectional inclusion is highly desirable. Familiarity with photo editing software and video editing is also advantageous, as these skills will be beneficial in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.

The internship is expected to last for three months and is unpaid. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
