Job Overview: The intern" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Communications Intern position at UNHCR offers a unique opportunity for individuals looking to develop their skills in communication within a humanitarian context. The intern will work closely with a Senior Communications Associate and will be involved in various aspects of communication, including media monitoring, content production, and social media management. This role is designed for motivated and creative individuals who possess strong writing and storytelling abilities and have a keen interest in humanitarian communications. The intern will gain hands-on experience in producing public-facing content, such as videos, photos, stories, and graphic design materials, while also learning about the operations of a leading agency in refugee protection. The position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to collaborate effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
Media Monitoring: Supporting the communications team by monitoring mentions of UNHCR Kenya in the media on a weekly basis.
Reporting: Assisting in the generation of monthly reports, including fact sheets and briefing kits, under the guidance of the supervisor.
Website Management: Updating the UNHCR Kenya website with relevant stories and content intended for public dissemination.
Event Support: Assisting with administrative and logistical arrangements for press briefings, workshops, and conferences.
Content Production: Contributing to the production of various content types, including video production, photography, writing, editing, and graphic design that highlights UNHCR’s work and the people it serves.
Social Media Management: Supporting the communications team in generating copy for UNHCR Kenya’s social media channels.
Website Editing: Uploading press releases and web stories to the website and maintaining an organized filing system for consent forms and other relevant documents.
Performing other related duties as required by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: To be eligible for this internship, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate or undergraduate program from an accredited university or higher education institution.
Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to the work of UNHCR.
Candidates with previous UNHCR internship experience must not have exceeded a total cumulative full-time internship duration of eight months.
Knowledge of English at B2 Level and/or the UN working language of the duty station if not English is required.
Educational Background: Candidates must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a relevant field, such as communications, public relations, international relations, or a related discipline. A background in communications or public relations is highly desirable, as it aligns with the responsibilities of the internship.
Experience: The position is open to recent graduates or current students, meaning that candidates are not required to have extensive professional experience. However, any previous internship experience, particularly in communications or related fields, will be considered an asset. Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow in a professional environment.
Languages: The mandatory language requirement for this position is proficiency in English at a B2 level. Knowledge of the UN working language of the duty station, if not English, is also required. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not mandatory.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time internship position with working hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Fridays, totaling 37 hours per week. The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in the Kenya Country Office. This internship does not require a functional clearance and is not remote.
