Job Overview:
The Communications and Social Media Intern will be part of the Sustainable Mobility Unit (SMU) within UNEP's Industry and Economy Division. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about environmental issues and have a keen interest in communications and social media. The intern will support the Unit's efforts to promote sustainable transport solutions by managing social media channels, developing digital content, and engaging with stakeholders. The role will involve assisting in the preparation of newsletters, communication materials, and reports, as well as contributing to various communication campaigns aimed at raising awareness about electric mobility and sustainable transport practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide support on social media dissemination for SMU work, including drafting posts, preparing visuals, scheduling content, monitoring engagement, and tracking basic analytics.
  • Manage and support three communication campaigns under the GEF Global Electric Mobility Project, the Unit’s Gender and E-Mobility workstream, and the PAAPAM (Pan African Action Plan for Active Mobility) including content planning and coordination.
  • Support the development and implementation of the UNEP–FIA Foundation Communications and Advocacy Strategy including communications planning, development of fact sheets and case studies, and coordination of aligned messaging and outreach activities across platforms.
  • Support the preparation and drafting of the Unit’s newsletter.
  • Support the collection, organisation, and basic visualization of vehicle electrification and sustainable mobility data for use in reports, presentations, and communication materials.
  • Contribute to maintaining and updating online knowledge platforms and internal tracking documents.
  • Support the development of short video content (e.g. reels, interview clips, event highlights), including basic editing and caption drafting.
  • Assist in preparing monthly communications and visibility reports summarizing social media performance, outreach activities, and key engagement metrics.
  • Support the layout, formatting, and visual presentation of reports and knowledge products. 1
  • Coordinate with UNEP communications colleagues to ensure alignment with corporate branding, clearance processes, and publication guidelines.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. A field of study closely related to the internship is required, and proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include projects, volunteer work, or internships in communications or environmental fields.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, understanding).

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
