Job Overview: The Expert on Climate Change Analysis will be responsible for providing technical expertise in the design and preparation of a comprehensive project proposal aimed at addressing climate change impacts on livestock systems in the ECOWAS region. This position requires a deep understanding of climate-related risks and the ability to develop climate models that inform project design and implementation. The expert will work closely with a team of specialists to analyze climate change impacts, identify vulnerabilities, and recommend adaptation and mitigation strategies. The role is pivotal in ensuring that the project proposal is data-driven and effectively addresses the challenges posed by climate change to livestock production, which is vital for food security and livelihoods in West Africa. The expert will also be involved in stakeholder engagement and collaboration with various technical experts to ensure the project's success.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Expert on Climate Change Analysis will carry out a variety of tasks, including: supporting the identification and formulation of the project in collaboration with FAO country offices and relevant technical officers; conducting detailed climate risk assessments focused on livestock systems across ECOWAS member states; identifying vulnerabilities to climate change, including extreme weather events and changes in water availability; mapping high-risk areas using geospatial tools; developing localized climate projections; analyzing temperature and precipitation scenarios; collaborating with technical experts to integrate climate findings into project activities; identifying adaptation and mitigation options; recommending innovative solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions; developing the climate rationale for the project; ensuring quality control and completeness of project proposals; organizing meetings and workshops for proposal validation; and performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in Climate Science, Environmental Science, Meteorology, or a related field. They should have at least 5 years of relevant experience in climate change analysis and modeling. Full proficiency in French is required, and familiarity with GCF processes and climate modeling tools such as R, Python, and ArcGIS is considered an asset. Strong analytical and report-writing skills are essential, along with the ability to interpret complex data and work in a multicultural environment. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary, as well as experience working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Educational Background: A university degree in a relevant field such as Climate Science, Environmental Science, or Meteorology is mandatory for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding climate systems and their impacts on agriculture and livestock.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in climate change analysis and modeling. This experience should include working on projects related to climate adaptation and mitigation, particularly in the context of agriculture and livestock systems. Experience working in multiple locations or areas within ECOWAS countries is highly valued, as is familiarity with diverse stakeholder groups, including governments and local communities.
