Job Overview: The Development Coordination Officer will be stationed at the UNESCO South Asia Regional Office in New Delhi, where they will report directly to the Director of the office. This role is pivotal in providing strategic support and guidance for sustainable development initiatives across the South Asia region, which includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The officer will work closely with various program specialists and national offices to ensure effective coordination and implementation of UNESCO's programs in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF). The position requires a strong focus on strategic planning, communication, and partnership development to enhance UNESCO's impact in the region. The officer will also be responsible for tracking national policies and regulations relevant to UNESCO's work, ensuring that the organization remains responsive to the needs and goals of the countries it serves.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Development Coordination Officer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Coordinating with National Offices in Dhaka and Kathmandu, as well as UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UNRCOs) and UN Country Teams (UNCTs) in Bhutan, India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka to provide effective support to the Director.
Ensuring adherence to organizational policies and procedures while facilitating internal coordination among program staff across all areas of UNESCO's work.
Supporting the Director in planning and reporting for UNSCDFs and UNRC offices in the region.
Assisting in the development of strategies and plans to position UNESCO effectively in support of regional and national objectives.
Engaging with government authorities, partner organizations, and stakeholders to foster partnerships and secure support for UNESCO initiatives.
Promoting knowledge sharing and management within the office to enhance collaboration and utilize existing good practices.
Keeping abreast of national government policies and regulations relevant to UNESCO's mission.
Undertaking additional duties as directed by the Director to support UNESCO's objectives in the region.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a completed Master’s degree or equivalent in fields such as Education, International Development, International Relations, Public Administration, or a related area. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of three years of professional experience in a relevant field that aligns with UNESCO's mandate. Experience in providing substantive support to senior officials in international organizations is highly desirable, as is experience in strategic planning, sustainable development policy, project/program management, or resource mobilization within the context of development cooperation. Familiarity with working in large multicultural teams at various levels is also advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a completed Master’s degree or equivalent in relevant fields such as Education, International Development, International Relations, Public Administration, or similar disciplines. This advanced education is essential to equip the candidate with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to UNESCO's mission and objectives in the region.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of three years of professional experience in a field relevant to UNESCO's mandate. Candidates with experience in providing support to senior officials within international organizations will be preferred. Additionally, experience in strategic planning, sustainable development policy, project/program management, or resource mobilization in the context of development cooperation is desirable. Candidates should also have experience working in multicultural teams at country, regional, and global levels, which is crucial for effective collaboration in this role.
Languages: Candidates must have excellent knowledge of an Indian official language, which is considered an asset for this position. Proficiency in English is also essential, as it is the primary language of communication within UNESCO and the United Nations system. Knowledge of additional languages may be beneficial but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: The position is classified under Level 4 of the Service Contract type, with a standard duration of assignment until the end of 2025, subject to annual renewal based on satisfactory performance. The approximate annual starting salary for this position is INR 1,728,887, which is net of taxes and includes various benefits such as 30 days of annual leave, medical insurance, and a pension plan.
