Job Overview:
The internship at the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC) is designed for motivated individuals seeking to gain practical experience in a dynamic and impactful environment. The position is primarily focused on supporting the UNOCC in its mission to provide situational awareness and analytical support to UN senior leadership. Interns will engage in various tasks that contribute to the effective functioning of the UNOCC, including data analysis, research, and the preparation of materials for high-level meetings. Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks under the supervision of the Head of the UNOCC Watch Room. Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the analysis and visualization of both structured and unstructured data from UNOCC Data Repositories.
  • Drafting and formatting meeting minutes, outcome notes, briefings, country profiles, visual aids, and presentations for UN senior leadership.
  • Conducting open-source monitoring and research to support the UNOCC's situational awareness efforts.
  • Helping organize enhanced monitoring and crisis management meetings.
  • Undertaking additional assignments as required to support the UNOCC's objectives. This internship is a full-time commitment, requiring 35 hours of work per week, and is expected to last for three months with the possibility of extension.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a background in political science, history, international relations, law, or a related field is desirable. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams, with a strong emphasis on data analysis skills.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be pursuing or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program. Specifically, applicants should be in their final year of study for their first university degree or have completed a higher degree. Proof of enrollment or completion will be required during the application process. The educational background should ideally align with fields relevant to the UN's work, such as international relations, political science, or law.

Experience:
While prior professional work experience is not a prerequisite for this internship, candidates with significant experience in data analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, will be preferred. This experience can be gained through academic projects, previous internships, or relevant coursework that demonstrates analytical skills and the ability to work with data effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French, which is another official UN language, is considered an advantage. Candidates who possess proficiency in additional UN languages may also enhance their application.

This internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week.
