Job Overview: The Human Rights Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the OHCHR's mission to protect human rights for all individuals. This internship is designed for individuals who are passionate about human rights and are eager to contribute to the organization's efforts in Myanmar. The intern will report directly to the Deputy Chief or Chief of the Myanmar Team and will be involved in a variety of tasks that aim to monitor and analyze human rights developments in the region. The intern's responsibilities will include researching and drafting reports, engaging with UN human rights mechanisms, and assisting in the organization of workshops and seminars. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of human rights while working within a respected international organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's daily responsibilities will vary based on their background and may include the following: monitoring and analyzing developments related to human rights, politics, and conflict in Myanmar; researching and drafting internal and external notes and reports; preparing daily news updates on the human rights situation in the region; supporting engagement with UN human rights mechanisms, including Special Procedures and Treaty Bodies; assisting in organizing workshops and seminars; maintaining and developing information and resource tools; participating in meetings and conferences, taking notes as requested; and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor. The intern will be expected to demonstrate initiative and a proactive approach to their work, contributing to the overall goals of the team.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme, applicants should have a field of study closely related to the internship they are applying for. Additionally, applicants must be students in their final year of a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. program or have completed such programs. Proof of eligibility must be provided with the application.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess a relevant educational background that aligns with the internship's focus on human rights. This includes being enrolled in or having completed a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or Ph.D. program in fields such as international relations, law, social sciences, or other related disciplines. The educational qualifications should demonstrate a strong understanding of human rights issues and the ability to engage with complex topics related to the field.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that demonstrates their understanding of human rights and related issues.
