Job Overview: The Heavy Vehicle Operator position is crucial for the Mission Support, Transport Unit of UNSMIL. The incumbent will be responsible for operating trucks and material handling equipment to transport cargo, passengers, and hazardous goods within the mission's operational area. This role requires a high level of professionalism and adherence to safety protocols, as the operator will be handling sensitive materials such as aviation fuel and gas cylinders. The position also involves vehicle maintenance, recovery, and ensuring compliance with transport guidelines. The operator will work under the supervision of the Chief Transport Officer and may be required to redeploy to different locations as directed by the Head of Mission. The role demands flexibility, as the operator will need to work shifts and respond to various operational needs as they arise.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Operate trucks and material handling equipment for transporting cargo, passengers, and hazardous goods.
Recover vehicles from team sites and transport them for repairs.
Assist in preparing trucks for field trips, including maintenance tasks like changing wheels and cleaning air filters.
Drive specialized and armored vehicles, ensuring compliance with manufacturer and transport guidelines.
Conduct day-to-day maintenance checks on assigned vehicles, including oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires.
Make deliveries of parcels and documents between offices and institutions.
Handle minor purchases and collect urgent items from local suppliers.
Collect goods from customs, adhering to regulations.
Safely transport authorized personnel and general cargo. 1
Liaise with the Dispatch Supervisor regarding vehicle maintenance and ensure proper logging of vehicle usage. 1
Follow protocols in case of accidents. 1
Work shifts as required. 1
Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a valid national commercial driving/operator license (categories B and C). A defensive armored driving vehicle certificate is desirable, as is a technical or vocational diploma in the automotive industry. The role requires a strong commitment to safety and adherence to operational guidelines, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
Educational Background: A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Additional qualifications in automotive technology or related fields are advantageous and may enhance a candidate's application.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in heavy vehicle or truck driving. Experience in a United Nations field operation or similar international organization is essential. Languages: Fluency in Arabic is required, along with a good command of English. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
