Job Overview:
The Driver position at UNFPA is crucial for providing reliable and safe transportation services to UN officials and visitors. The Driver must demonstrate a client-oriented approach, courtesy, confidentiality, and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse national and cultural backgrounds. The position is based in the Qamishli office, where the Driver will collaborate closely with the Operations Manager in Damascus. The Driver is responsible for transporting authorized personnel, delivering and collecting mail and documents, and ensuring the vehicle is maintained in optimal condition. This role is essential for the smooth operation of the UNFPA office and contributes to the organization's mission of promoting reproductive health and rights.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Provide reliable and safe driving services for UN officials and staff, ensuring timely transport for meetings and events.
  • Drive office vehicles for the transport of UN staff, officials, and visitors, as well as for the delivery and collection of mail, documents, and other items.
  • Meet official personnel and visitors at the airport, assisting with visa and customs formalities as required.
  • Maintain accurate daily vehicle logs and assist in the preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  • Ensure proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle, including timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, oil changes, tire checks, and cleanliness.
  • Keep track of all required documents and supplies in the vehicle, including insurance, registration, and first aid kits.
  • Follow established procedures in case of accidents, ensuring compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Provide translation services in the local language when necessary for the head of the office or official personnel.
  • Assist office staff with filing, photocopying, and maintaining stores as needed. 1
  • Help with the mailing and distribution of newsletters and publications, and manage payment of office bills as required. 1
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor or Head of Office.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
  • Completed Secondary Level education.
  • A minimum of two years of work experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy, or UN system, with a proven safe driving record.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol, and local road conditions.
  • Skills in performing minor vehicle repairs.
  • Experience driving in humanitarian situations, particularly in Northeast Syria.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is the completion of Secondary Level education. This foundational education is essential for understanding the responsibilities and duties associated with the role of a Driver in a professional environment.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant work experience as a driver, specifically within international organizations, embassies, or the UN system. Candidates should have a demonstrated safe driving record and experience in navigating local roads and conditions, particularly in challenging environments such as humanitarian contexts in Northeast Syria.

Languages:
Fluency in Arabic is mandatory for this position, as it is essential for communication with local staff and officials. Additionally, a basic knowledge of English is required to facilitate communication within the UN system and with international personnel.
