Job Overview:
The Geographical Information Systems Intern will be an integral part of the Data Unit within the UNOCC. This position is designed for motivated individuals who are eager to support the UN's mission through data analysis and visualization. The intern will engage in producing GIS maps that serve various purposes, including operational support, advocacy, awareness-raising, and strategic planning. The role requires a strong understanding of integrated analysis, modeling, and data engineering, which are essential for informing decision-making processes at the highest levels of the UN. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals and gain valuable insights into the workings of the UN, particularly in crisis and risk management.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for supporting the Data Unit in various tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Assisting in the production of GIS maps for different operational needs and strategic purposes.
  • Conducting integrated analysis and modeling to inform senior UN leadership.
  • Engaging in data engineering tasks that contribute to the overall mission of the UNOCC.
  • Collaborating with team members to ensure effective communication and support for team goals.
  • Participating in meetings and discussions to provide insights based on data analysis.
  • Contributing to the development of reports and presentations that utilize GIS data and visualizations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate strong competencies in teamwork, reliability, and communication. They should be able to work collaboratively with others and contribute positively to the team's objectives. Additionally, candidates should have relevant coursework or experience in GIS, remote sensing, cartography, visualization, spatial analysis, modeling, geospatial programming, and geospatial data management. A proactive approach to problem-solving and a willingness to learn are also essential.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should be pursuing or have completed a degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field with a focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or spatial analysis. Relevant coursework in GIS, remote sensing, and data visualization is highly desirable, as it will provide the necessary foundation for the tasks involved in this internship.

Experience:
While prior professional experience is not mandatory, candidates should have relevant academic experience or internships that demonstrate their ability to work with GIS technologies and data analysis. Familiarity with geospatial programming and data management will be considered an asset, as it aligns with the responsibilities of the internship.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also necessary, as it is another working language. Additionally, proficiency in any other official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) would be advantageous and could enhance the candidate's application.
