Job Overview:
The Executive Secretary of the UNCCD plays a pivotal role in leading the organization and ensuring the effective implementation of its mandate. This position involves strategic planning, policy development, and coordination of international efforts to combat desertification. The Executive Secretary is expected to engage with member states, civil society, and other stakeholders to promote awareness and action on land degradation issues. The role requires a strong understanding of environmental policies, sustainable development, and the ability to navigate complex international negotiations. The Executive Secretary will also oversee the UNCCD's programs and initiatives, ensuring alignment with global environmental goals and fostering partnerships to enhance the organization's impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the UNCCD, ensuring alignment with its mission and objectives.
  • Represent the UNCCD at international forums, conferences, and meetings, advocating for the importance of combating desertification.
  • Develop and implement policies and programs that address land degradation and promote sustainable land management practices.
  • Coordinate with member states, NGOs, and other stakeholders to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing on desertification issues.
  • Oversee the preparation of reports, publications, and communication materials to raise awareness about the UNCCD's work and achievements.
  • Manage the UNCCD's budget and resources effectively, ensuring transparency and accountability in financial matters.
  • Lead and mentor a diverse team of professionals, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of UNCCD initiatives, making recommendations for improvements and adjustments as needed.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven leadership experience in an international organization or similar setting, with a strong track record in environmental policy and sustainable development.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities, with a focus on results-oriented approaches.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of the UNCCD and a deep understanding of desertification and land degradation issues.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree or higher in environmental science, international relations, public policy, or a related field is required. Additional qualifications or certifications in sustainable development or land management are advantageous.

Experience:
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental management, international relations, or a related field is required. Experience in a leadership role within an international organization is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in other UN languages, particularly French or Spanish, is an asset and will be considered an advantage.
