The internship is located within the People Management Central (HR) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which is part of the United Nations. ESCWA was established to promote economic and social development in the region, and it operates in various countries across the Middle East. ESCWA aims to foster collaboration among member states to enhance their economic and social conditions. Job Overview:
The Human Resources Intern will be working under the supervision of a Human Resources Officer within the People Management Central (HR) of ESCWA. The intern is expected to work five days a week, totaling 37.5 hours, and will gain practical experience in various aspects of human resources management. The internship is designed to provide the intern with exposure to the workings of the United Nations and the opportunity to contribute to the HR functions of ESCWA. The intern will be involved in tasks related to training, recruitment, performance management, and organizational management, among others. This position is ideal for individuals looking to gain insight into the operations of a major international organization and develop their skills in human resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's daily responsibilities will vary based on their background and the specific unit they are assigned to. Key duties may include:
  • Assisting in training programs and performance management processes.
  • Supporting recruitment efforts for both staff and non-staff positions.
  • Monitoring organizational management practices and contributing to the improvement of HR processes.
  • Managing benefits and entitlements for employees.
  • Conducting research related to strategic human resources management.
  • Maintaining records and documentation related to HR activities.
  • Participating in the internship program and supporting the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace.
  • Collaborating with team members to achieve organizational goals and contribute to a positive work environment.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent), or have graduated with a university degree.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Exhibit the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views. No prior work experience is required for this internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a university degree program. This includes those pursuing a master's degree or those in their final year of undergraduate studies. The educational background should ideally be related to human resources, social sciences, international relations, or a similar field that aligns with the functions of the United Nations and ESCWA.

Experience:
No prior work experience is required to apply for this internship. However, any relevant volunteer work, academic projects, or extracurricular activities that demonstrate an interest in human resources or international relations may be beneficial and should be highlighted in the application.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable, as it is a working language of ESCWA. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their language proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas, while knowledge is defined as 'confident' in at least two of the four areas.

Additional Notes:
The internship is for a minimum duration of two months on a full-time basis, with the possibility of extension for a maximum of six months. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns must provide proof of valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of the internship and submit a medical certificate of good health prior to starting. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process and does not take responsibility for personal effects during the internship.
