Job Overview:
The National UN Youth Volunteer position is part of the UNOPS project titled 'Cities 4 Women: Inclusive and Climate Resilient Urbanization in Nepal.' This project aims to integrate inclusive and resilient urban planning and design into municipal infrastructure planning and implementation processes, focusing on public open spaces. The role involves supporting the project manager and architect/urban planner in various tasks, including reviewing municipal planning documents, organizing participatory workshops, co-designing urban interventions, and developing technical project proposals. The volunteer will also be responsible for translating community-based designs into technical drawings and contributing to the approval of proof of concept projects. This position offers an opportunity to engage with communities and promote voluntary action while addressing the challenges of rapid urbanization and climate vulnerability in Nepal.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The National UN Youth Volunteer will have a range of responsibilities, including:
  • Supporting the desk review of existing municipal planning documents such as Periodic Plans, Sectoral Plans, Annual Plans, Integrated Urban Development Plans, Landuse Plans, and plans related to Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and Climate Resilience.
  • Organizing participatory and women-focused workshops, community mappings, and data collection activities.
  • Co-designing gender-sensitive and climate-responsive urban interventions at the ward level.
  • Assisting the project team in developing technical project proposals and visualizing data related to architecture and urban design projects.
  • Translating community-based designs into technical drawings at scale.
  • Contributing to the UNOPS technical team to approve developed proof of concept projects for financing through the Challenge Fund.
  • Supporting other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor. Additionally, the volunteer is encouraged to engage in activities that promote volunteerism and contribute to UNV publications and initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the National UN Youth Volunteer position should possess a strong understanding of urban planning and design principles, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. They should demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the values of the United Nations. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate effectively, and a genuine commitment to the principles of voluntary engagement. Experience working in diverse cultural settings and with marginalized communities will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the working language of UNOPS. Proficiency in Nepali or other local languages would be considered a significant advantage, as it would facilitate communication with local communities and stakeholders.
