UNMISS has a significant presence in South Sudan, with a ceiling of 17,000 troops and over 2,100 police personnel. Job Overview: The Public Information Officer position is situated within the Communications & Public Information Section (CPIS) of UNMISS in Wau, a non-family duty station. The officer will report directly to the Head Office in Wau and the Chief of Service for Public Information. The role involves planning and organizing awareness-raising events using various engaging methods such as drama, music, and sports to promote UNMISS's goals. The officer will also be responsible for creating a public relations plan, developing promotional materials, and organizing events for international observances. Additionally, the officer will maintain networks with influential figures in South Sudan and produce media monitoring reports to inform mission leadership. The position requires travel within the state and occasionally to other states to cover stories and events, as well as mentoring national staff in public information activities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Public Information Officer will undertake a variety of tasks including: planning and organizing awareness-raising events; conceptualizing a public relations plan; producing promotional materials; organizing celebratory events for UN-related International Days; creating and maintaining networks with high-profile officials; analyzing local media and producing reports; supporting field CPI officers; traveling to cover stories; supervising the distribution of CPI print products; mentoring national staff; writing and editing content for outreach activities; designing graphic materials using Adobe software; and performing other duties as assigned by the CPI Section Chief.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong communication skills, creativity, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. They should demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and effective planning and organizational skills. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Candidates should also have experience in public relations, media, or communications, and be able to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in these areas will be considered an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of public information principles and practices, as well as experience in developing communication strategies.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in public information, communications, or media relations. Experience working in a conflict or post-conflict environment is highly desirable. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations, particularly in South Sudan, will be an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages spoken in South Sudan is considered an asset and will enhance communication with local communities and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The position is classified as a non-family duty station, and candidates should be prepared for austere living conditions with shared accommodation. The role may involve working in challenging environments, and candidates must be adaptable to difficult conditions.
