Job Overview:
The consultant will conduct a comprehensive sub-landscape Situational Analysis in the Greater Rift Valley landscape of Kenya. This analysis aims to build a shared understanding of the state of four prioritized sub-landscapes, focusing on the drivers of land degradation, trends, opportunities, and challenges in the context of food, land, and water through the lens of biodiversity, agriculture, and water outcomes. The consultant will analyze ecological conditions, socio-economic factors, and community livelihoods to assess important trends and provide insights into resource management and restoration opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct a detailed report on the situational analysis and stakeholder analysis for each of the four sub-landscapes, highlighting key natural resources and their health status.
  • Identify and evaluate priority challenges and opportunities affecting natural resource management, including land use changes and socio-economic trends.
  • Analyze interactions within the sub-landscape, such as the impact of upland management on downstream resources.
  • Assess the effectiveness of national and county-specific policy instruments related to forest landscape restoration.
  • Perform a detailed stakeholder analysis and social landscape mapping, identifying key institutions and their roles in resource governance.
  • Identify hotspots of land degradation and propose feasible restoration methods, including mapping specific areas for intervention.
  • Utilize desktop reviews, consultative meetings, and interviews with local actors to gather information and insights.

Required Qualifications:
The consultant must demonstrate capacity in similar work, including excellent knowledge of the Greater Rift Valley Landscape, expertise in research on land degradation drivers, and experience in socio-economic research in Kenya. Familiarity with gender and social equity issues, GIS, and statistical tools is essential. The consultant should also have a track record of publishing in journal articles and technical reports.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental science, social science, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in land management, biodiversity, or socio-economic research will be an advantage.

Experience:
The consultant should have substantial experience in conducting situational analyses, particularly in the context of environmental and socio-economic research. Experience working in the Greater Rift Valley or similar landscapes is highly desirable, along with a proven ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and facilitate participatory assessments.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in Kiswahili or local dialects spoken in the Greater Rift Valley region is considered an asset, as it will enhance communication with local communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is expected to last for 2 months (60 days) starting upon contract signature. Compensation will be based on a fixed fee for deliverables, with no reimbursement for miscellaneous costs. Proposals must be submitted electronically by the deadline, and all prices should include VAT and applicable taxes.
