Job Overview:
The Provincial Coordinator of Simbu Province will play a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of the GEF 6 Project on Sustainable Financing of Papua New Guinea’s Protected Area Network. This position requires the individual to coordinate and monitor project activities, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders, including provincial administration, civil society, and the private sector. The coordinator will be responsible for providing regular updates to the Project Manager, managing provincial work plans, and facilitating information sharing among stakeholders. The role also involves providing technical support to communities in accessing additional funding and serving as a focal point for UNDP in the event of natural disasters. The coordinator will work closely with the project team and report directly to the Project Manager, ensuring that project objectives are met and that the provincial-level coordination mechanism is established and functioning effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Provincial Coordinator will be responsible for a range of duties, including: supervising and overseeing the implementation of the GEF 6 Project; coordinating with implementing partners and provincial administration; providing weekly updates to the Project Manager on project progress and challenges; ensuring proper coordination of the provincial work plan; managing meetings and conferences; supporting capacity building for communities and NGO partners; facilitating information sharing on protected areas; providing technical support for funding access; and serving as the focal point for UNDP during natural disasters. The coordinator will also communicate with other provincial coordinators to share information and resolve implementation challenges, and assist in monitoring and reporting on agreements established between the Provincial Administration and CEPA/UNDP.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science, forestry, biodiversity conservation, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in a relevant field is acceptable, provided the candidate has at least two years of relevant professional experience. Experience in project cycle management, familiarity with UNDP policies, and proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based management systems are also required. Candidates should demonstrate integrity, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work effectively in a diverse environment.
Educational Background:
The position requires an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science, forestry, biodiversity conservation, or a related discipline. A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) is acceptable if accompanied by relevant professional experience in the field.
Experience:
Candidates with a master’s degree are not required to have prior professional work experience. However, those with a bachelor’s degree must have a minimum of two years of relevant experience in areas such as forestry, biodiversity conservation, disaster risk management, and development programs/projects. Experience in project cycle management within public or private sectors or international organizations is essential, along with a proven network in Simbu Province.
Languages:
Fluency in written and oral English is mandatory, along with proficiency in Tok-Pisin. These language skills are essential for effective communication with stakeholders and for the successful execution of project responsibilities.
Additional Notes:
The position is full-time and involves working closely with various stakeholders, including government officials, civil society, and private sector partners. The role may require travel within the province and engagement with local communities.
