Job Overview:
The Field Security Coordination Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel and operations in Somalia. Reporting directly to the Principal Security Adviser, this position is responsible for providing leadership support in security management and policy guidance to facilitate effective UN Programme delivery. The specialist will prepare and review security management documents, support the Security Management Teams, conduct security surveys and assessments, and maintain communication with UNSMS entities. The role requires a proactive approach to risk management and crisis preparedness, ensuring that security measures are implemented effectively to protect UN staff and assets in a challenging environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Field Security Coordination Specialist include:
  • Providing leadership support in security management and policy guidance to enable effective UN Programme delivery throughout Somalia.
  • Preparing and reviewing security management documents, including the development and implementation of security plans.
  • Supporting the Principal Security Adviser and Security Management Teams in planning, implementing, and evaluating security operations.
  • Conducting security surveys and assessments to identify risks and recommend improvements.
  • Coordinating 24-hour responses to security incidents involving UNSMS staff and maintaining records in the UN Safety and Security Incident Database.
  • Establishing communication systems for UNSMS entities and ensuring integration into the UN Security Emergency Communications System.
  • Liaising with partner organizations to ensure the safety and security of UNSMS staff.
  • Providing timely security advice and briefings to UNSMS personnel.
  • Monitoring compliance with security policies and procedures and advising on security equipment procurement. 1
  • Conducting periodic security assessments of UN premises and advising on improvements. 1
  • Developing and delivering security training to UNSMS personnel. 1
  • Performing other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Field Security Coordination Specialist position include:
  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Security Management, Business Administration, Political/Social Science, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Law, International Relations, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in the stated areas combined with two years of qualifying experience will be considered.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in security, risk, or disaster management in public or private sectors, or seven (7) years with a bachelor's degree.
  • Management experience in the public or private sector is required, along with at least two years of international field experience in security operations.
  • Experience advising Senior Management on security enhancements, particularly in Somalia, is desired.
  • Experience in conducting comprehensive security assessments at various levels is also preferred.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as Security Management, Business Administration, Political/Social Science, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Law, or International Relations. A first-level university degree in these areas, combined with two years of qualifying experience, will also be considered. Professional certifications in security management, such as UNDSS Security Certification, are advantageous.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant work experience in security, risk, or disaster management, with a master's degree, or seven years with a bachelor's degree. Candidates should have progressively responsible experience in national security, military, police, or corporate environments. International field experience in security operations is essential, along with management experience in the public or private sector.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. A working knowledge of another UN language is desired, which would enhance communication and collaboration within the UN system.
