Job Overview:
This internship is a full-time, in-person position located in New York, specifically within the Office of the Assistant-General for Human Resources (OASG OHR) in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC). The intern will work closely with the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary-General or the Human Resources Officer. The role involves participating in the preparation of user requirements and technical specifications, assisting in the design and development of information systems, and undertaking analysis of system modules. The intern will also be responsible for rigorous testing of applications software, maintaining system portions, and ensuring data security and integrity. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in human resources and information systems within a prestigious international organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities including:
  • Participating in the preparation of user requirements and technical specifications for information systems.
  • Assisting in the design, development, and installation of information systems.
  • Analyzing well-defined modules within the system and developing enhancements and new features.
  • Designing and implementing small, stand-alone systems as needed.
  • Conducting rigorous testing and proving of applications software.
  • Maintaining assigned portions of systems and providing operational support.
  • Analyzing and implementing system changes and upgrades.
  • Writing and developing programs to interface with existing systems.
  • Ensuring data security and integrity throughout the systems. 1
  • Preparing, updating, and maintaining system documentation and related technical/procedural manuals. 1
  • Assisting in the setup and monitoring of software performance measures.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). A background or exposure to human resources, public administration, or related issues is desirable. While professional work experience is not required, applicants must have a field of study closely related to the internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be attached to the application, and an official certificate will be required at a later stage. Knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Excel, and MS Teams, is essential.

Experience:
No prior professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship, particularly in human resources or information systems.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of French is desirable, and proficiency in any additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage.

This internship is designed to last for 6 months, with flexibility in duration based on the needs of the successful candidate. Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. For non-U.S. citizens, obtaining a G-4 visa is mandatory for full-time internships. Interns must discuss specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
