Job Overview: The WASH Specialist (Urban) plays a crucial role in UNICEF's efforts to implement and manage WASH programming, particularly in urban settings. Reporting to the Chief of WASH, the Specialist is responsible for providing technical, operational, and management assistance throughout the WASH programming process. This includes overseeing the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of WASH output results for the country program from 2025 to 202
The role focuses on both conventional and non-conventional water scheme design and delivery, ensuring effective project management and capacity building of UNICEF staff on renewable energy and non-conventional water systems. The Specialist will also coordinate the Urban Water for Port Sudan project, ensuring timely delivery of project milestones and results while addressing critical issues as they arise.
Duties and Responsibilities: The WASH Specialist's duties include advising the Chief of WASH on annual work plans, coordinating project implementation, providing technical advice to WASH staff, contributing to program development and planning, managing monitoring and evaluation processes, and ensuring effective collaboration with governmental entities and other UNICEF sectors. The Specialist will draft documentation for program reviews, monitor project budgets, prepare sectoral progress reports, and provide technical support in designing urban WASH infrastructure. Additionally, the Specialist will build partnerships with government counterparts, UN agencies, and NGOs, manage WASH preparedness for emergencies, and contribute to knowledge management and capacity building initiatives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in Water Supply, Civil, Sanitary, or Environmental Engineering. A minimum of eight years of professional experience in WASH-related programs for developing countries is required, with a preference for experience in managing large-scale projects and urban WASH settings. Knowledge of desalination, climate action, and environmental safeguarding is considered an asset. Fluency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of Arabic is advantageous.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree in a relevant field such as Water Supply, Civil, Sanitary, or Environmental Engineering is required for this position.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of eight years of professional experience in WASH-related programs, particularly in developing countries. Experience in managing large-scale projects and urban WASH settings is preferred, along with knowledge of desalination and environmental safeguarding.
Languages: Fluency in English is required, and knowledge of Arabic is considered an asset.
