Job Overview: The Associate Project Officer will work under the auspices of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, which serves as the secretariat for the 1972 Convention concerning the protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The role involves supporting State Parties in implementing the Convention and developing policies, tools, and programs for capacity development. The incumbent will specifically contribute to the operational strategy for Priority Africa (2022-2029) and collaborate with Morocco's Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) to create innovative training courses aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage. The position requires a focus on integrated approaches to heritage preservation, emphasizing the relationship between tangible and intangible heritage and the role of communities in safeguarding their cultural heritage.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Contribute to the creation of a multimodal program focused on heritage in Africa, including coordinating with ICCROM to develop training modules related to the 1970 and 1972 Conventions. Organize online workshops and quarterly training sessions for emerging African professionals in heritage preservation. Assist in designing a MOOC on safeguarding African heritage.
Collaborate with UM6P to activate an African university center on heritage development, including developing an online database of African university programs and organizing meetings with universities to share experiences on integrated approaches to heritage preservation.
Create documentation and communication materials to enhance the project's reach and sustainability, including producing communication materials and coordinating a short documentary on the mentoring experience.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in culture, heritage conservation and management, or a related field. A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in the conservation of natural and cultural heritage is required, with at least one year of experience at the international level preferred. Strong planning and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to establish priorities and meet tight deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary, as well as the ability to work effectively with diverse partners and stakeholders.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) is required, preferably in fields related to culture, heritage conservation, and management. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of cultural heritage and its preservation.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in the field of conservation of natural and cultural heritage. It is preferred that candidates have at least one year of experience acquired at the international level, which will provide them with a broader perspective on heritage issues and practices.
Languages: Candidates must have excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English or French, with a good knowledge of the other language being advantageous.
