Job Overview: The Chief of Party (COP) for the RENDA VERDE project in Mozambique will play a crucial role in leading and managing a five-year USAID-funded initiative aimed at enhancing community benefits from biodiversity conservation. The COP will be responsible for providing strategic direction and technical guidance to ensure the successful implementation of project activities. This includes overseeing project planning, monitoring, reporting, and evaluation, as well as coordinating with various stakeholders, including USAID, government entities, and local partners. The COP will also be tasked with fostering a collaborative environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion within the project team and among stakeholders. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate significant experience in managing similar international development projects, particularly those related to climate change and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Chief of Party will lead the project by providing vision and direction, ensuring that project results and deliverables align with the established work plan. Key responsibilities include supervising and mentoring senior technical staff and consultants, motivating teams to achieve results, and promoting a strong team dynamic. The COP will build and maintain productive relationships with USAID, host governments, project partners, and key stakeholders, serving as the primary liaison among all project stakeholders. Additionally, the COP will manage the project's operational, financial, and administrative priorities, directing planning and budgeting processes. The role involves creating or adapting management systems in line with CARE’s standard operating procedures and ensuring compliance with USAID policies and relevant national laws. The COP will oversee the design and implementation of conservation activities, income generation, and market access interventions, while ensuring documentation and dissemination of findings and lessons learned throughout the project cycle. Furthermore, the COP will oversee the monitoring and evaluation function, preparing all required reports and deliverables.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced degree in Environment, Agriculture, Engineering, Business, Marketing, or a related field, or have equivalent experience. A minimum of 10 years of progressively increasing leadership and management responsibility in USAID-funded development activities of similar size and scope is required, with at least 5 years of experience working in country-based programs. Previous management experience in a similar position with REGO, Feed The Future, or related projects is essential. Experience as a Chief of Party, Deputy Chief of Party, or in senior management roles is required, along with a strong preference for candidates with experience in Southern Africa. Familiarity with managing USAID cooperative agreements and contracts, as well as strong financial management and project operations oversight abilities, is also necessary.
Educational Background: An advanced degree in a relevant field such as Environment, Agriculture, Engineering, Business, or Marketing is required. Equivalent experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 10 years of progressively increasing leadership and management responsibility in USAID-funded development activities, with at least 5 years of experience in country-based programs. Candidates should have previous management experience in similar roles and a strong preference will be given to those with experience in Southern Africa.
Languages: Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential, along with excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills. Knowledge of additional languages may be beneficial but is not specified as a requirement.
Additional Notes: This position is a Key Personnel role and is subject to USAID approval, as well as project award and funding. National candidates are encouraged to apply. The position will be based in Maputo, Mozambique, and is expected to be a full-time role for the duration of the five-year project.
