Job Overview: The National Survey Monitor for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) will play a crucial role in monitoring and supporting the implementation of national surveys aimed at assessing the prevalence and economic burden of AMR in Malawi. This position is vital in ensuring that the survey adheres to scientific and quality standards while collaborating closely with the Malawi Ministry of Health, WHO, and other stakeholders. The monitor will be responsible for overseeing daily survey activities, providing training and mentorship to survey teams, and ensuring compliance with established protocols. The role requires a proactive approach to identify gaps in the survey process and implement corrective measures to enhance the quality of data collected. The monitor will also facilitate communication between hospitals, laboratories, and couriers to ensure the smooth operation of the survey.
Duties and Responsibilities: The National Survey Monitor will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Monitoring survey activities in hospitals weekly through the review of survey forms and logs, as well as conducting remote assessments and discussions.
Ensuring adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) during remote screenings of hospital activities.
Enrolling eligible patients into the survey following the consent process, ensuring compliance with local ethics committee standards.
Verifying that all survey forms are accurately completed to facilitate effective supervision of survey activities.
Overseeing sample collection, referral, and transportation of specimens according to the outlined protocol standards.
Supervising communication between hospitals, couriers, and laboratories to ensure timely processing of samples.
Archiving and transporting survey forms appropriately to prevent loss of data.
Providing daily reports on activities, data entry, and key milestones for each allocated facility.
Ensuring that clinical staff are informed about survey activities and adequately trained. 1
Conducting induction training for new ward staff and delivering remote refresher training on survey techniques. 1
Monitoring intermediate laboratories and tracking survey samples. 1
Assisting in data entry of survey forms and results. 1
Ensuring timely communication of laboratory test results back to clinicians. 1
Escalating identified issues to implement corrective measures. 1
Performing other relevant tasks as directed by the National AMR survey coordinator to ensure the quality and progress of the survey.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical and medical allied disciplines such as Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Clinical Research, or Epidemiology. Additionally, training in research methodologies is desirable. Candidates must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly in English, and demonstrate functional skills in handling data collection forms and data management. WHO competencies such as effective communication, result production, teamwork, and respect for cultural differences are essential for this role.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in relevant medical or health-related fields. A background in research methodologies is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to contribute effectively to the survey's objectives.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in research or health service delivery is essential for this position. Experience in monitoring health-related surveys or similar projects will be advantageous. Candidates should also be registered with relevant health regulatory authorities, which demonstrates their professional standing and compliance with local regulations.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills required for effective interaction with various stakeholders involved in the survey process. Knowledge of additional languages may be beneficial but is not specified as a requirement.
