Job Overview: The Environment Associate will play a crucial role in supporting the integration of social development dimensions into AIIB's operational work, which is vital for the development of sustainable infrastructure. This position involves addressing environmental dimensions of policies, programs, projects, technical assistance, and training, as well as managing environmental risks and impacts associated with investment projects in accordance with AIIB's Environmental and Social Policy (ESP). The associate will engage in various activities aimed at ensuring that AIIB's financed projects yield meaningful outcomes and impacts, particularly in the context of sustainable development.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Environment Associate will be responsible for a wide range of duties including: supporting the formulation and implementation of environmental aspects of AIIB's strategies, policies, programs, and projects; participating in the identification, appraisal, design, and implementation of investment programs and projects to evaluate environmental feasibility; preparing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) across priority sectors such as water, energy, and transport; managing environmental risks and impacts of investment projects through conducting environmental reviews and compliance studies; monitoring environmental and social aspects in projects under implementation; developing and monitoring action plans to resolve compliance issues; coordinating the application of disclosure and consultation processes for environmental and social assessments; supporting the development of AIIB's approach to climate change, biodiversity, and ecosystem services; coordinating project-level grievance resolution mechanisms; and developing training on environmental safeguard systems for AIIB staff and clients.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in environmental or natural science, engineering, planning, social science, community development, law, or a related discipline. Additionally, a minimum of 4-5 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social planning and management is required. This experience can be gained through work with a multilateral development bank (MDB), bilateral donor, consultancy, or private sector organization. Proven expertise in planning and managing environmental and social aspects of infrastructure programs and projects is essential, particularly in sectors such as energy, transport, water, and urban development. Candidates should also have demonstrated experience in preparing Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) and Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs).
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as environmental or natural science, engineering, planning, social science, community development, law, or a related discipline is required for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding the complexities of environmental and social planning and management in the context of infrastructure projects.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 4-5 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social planning and management. This experience should ideally include working for or as a government counterpart or consultant to a multilateral development bank (MDB), bilateral donor, consultancy, or private sector organization. Candidates should have a proven track record in the planning and management of environmental and social aspects of infrastructure programs and projects, including experience in sectors such as energy, transport, water, and urban development.
Languages: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory for this position. Knowledge of the language(s) of a country in which AIIB invests would be considered an advantage, as it may facilitate better communication and understanding with local stakeholders and clients.
