Job Overview: The Programme Specialist in Education will work under the overall authority of the Assistant Director General for Education and the Director of the Division for Peace and Sustainable Development. The incumbent will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and reporting on education programs that address violent pasts, aligning with UNESCO’s broader initiatives on Global Citizenship Education. This role involves supporting the planning and coordination of activities related to Holocaust and genocide education, managing the International Program on Holocaust and Genocide Education, and providing strategic guidance on Global Citizenship and Peace Education. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including project partners and UNESCO Field Offices, to ensure effective program development and implementation. The incumbent will also play a crucial role in resource mobilization and strengthening partnerships in the field of education about violent pasts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the planning and coordination of UNESCO activities on Holocaust and genocide education, including advocacy activities and capacity building.
Manage the implementation and further development of UNESCO’s International Program on Holocaust and Genocide Education, coordinating with project partners and stakeholders.
Provide strategic guidance on Global Citizenship and Peace Education activities, focusing on history education and education for peace.
Contribute to resource mobilization by identifying funding opportunities and developing proposals.
Strengthen the network of key partners in Global Citizenship and Peace Education, particularly regarding education about violent pasts.
Monitor and report on the progress of education programs, ensuring alignment with UNESCO’s objectives and the 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development.
Required Qualifications:
Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in History, Education, Social or Human Sciences, Political Science, or related fields.
Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience in history education, civic and citizenship education, or education policy.
Proven experience in international policy development, education research, and capacity development.
Strong understanding of education issues related to violent pasts, including the Holocaust and genocide.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in relevant fields such as History, Education, Social or Human Sciences, or Political Science. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of education related to violent pasts and for effectively contributing to UNESCO’s mission in this area.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields, with at least 2 years of experience at the international level. Candidates should have a strong track record in international policy development, education research, and program management, demonstrating their ability to engage with senior officials and stakeholders effectively.
Languages: Candidates must have excellent knowledge of English or French, both written and spoken, and a good working knowledge of the other language. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication and collaboration in a multicultural environment.
Additional Notes: The contract is a Project Appointment for a duration of 2 years, and the recruitment is open to both internal and external candidates. The position is full-time, and the approximate annual starting salary is 104,581 USD, with additional benefits including 30 days of annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, and a pension plan.
