Job Overview:
The Researcher position within the Disability Rights Division (DRD) of Human Rights Watch is focused on investigating, documenting, and reporting on disability rights issues worldwide. The role is integral to advancing HRW's global strategy by addressing priority research topics related to disability rights. The Researcher will work closely with the Director of the DRD and will be based in one of HRW's offices located in Nairobi, New York, Toronto, or London, with flexibility for other locations. The position requires a proactive approach to research and advocacy, with an emphasis on collaboration with NGOs and other stakeholders to enhance the impact of HRW's work in the field of disability rights. The Researcher will be expected to produce high-quality written materials for both internal and external audiences, contributing to HRW's advocacy efforts and strategic planning processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Researcher will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties including:

• Conducting thorough research and monitoring of disability rights abuses by gathering and analyzing information from diverse sources such as governments, NGOs, and media.
• Documenting developments affecting people with disabilities and producing reports and advocacy materials based on findings.
• Assisting in the formulation and execution of advocacy strategies aimed at reforming laws and policies that negatively impact individuals with disabilities.
• Collaborating with divisional leadership on strategic planning and contributing to annual reviews and implementation of HRW's global strategy.
• Building partnerships with NGOs focused on disability rights to ensure HRW's work complements their efforts.
• Reviewing and editing organizational outputs to ensure they meet HRW's standards and accurately reflect disability rights issues.
• Monitoring emerging issues related to disability rights, including technological advancements and humanitarian crises.
• Traveling as necessary for fact-finding missions and delivering timely outputs aligned with HRW's strategic priorities.
• Performing additional responsibilities as required to support the division's objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a strong background in disability rights and international human rights research, advocacy, and communications. Essential qualifications include:

• A deep understanding of disability rights issues and the ability to effectively communicate these topics.
• Experience conducting interviews with diverse individuals, including victims and witnesses, with sensitivity and professionalism.
• Strong analytical skills to distill complex information into actionable insights.
• Proven ability to develop and implement advocacy strategies that leverage opportunities for change.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, with proficiency in French being highly desirable.
• Strong initiative, creativity, and strategic thinking capabilities, along with exceptional writing and editing skills.
• Ability to maintain relationships with key advocacy targets, including government officials and international bodies.
• Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration within HRW and with external partners.
• Capacity to manage multiple tasks effectively and work under pressure while making sound decisions.

Educational Background:
An advanced (graduate) degree in international relations, journalism, law, social sciences, or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent work experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. The educational background should provide a solid foundation for understanding the complexities of disability rights and human rights advocacy.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of relevant experience working on disability rights at both national and regional levels is required. This experience should encompass research, advocacy, and engagement with various stakeholders in the field of human rights, particularly focusing on disability issues.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, with excellent oral and written communication skills being essential. Proficiency in French is highly desirable and will be considered an asset.
