Job Overview: As an Applied Physicist at CERN, you will join the ATLAS Group and play a pivotal role in the upgrade of the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector. This position involves leading the electronics integration for new RPC detectors that will be implemented in the Inner layer of the Barrel Muon Spectrometer. Your responsibilities will include the installation and commissioning of these new detectors in the ATLAS cavern, where your expertise in commissioning and operations of gaseous detectors will be invaluable. The role requires a strong team spirit and versatility to ensure the success of the ATLAS muon upgrade program, which is critical for advancing our understanding of particle physics.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Applied Physicist include leading the production and testing of electronics boards, which involves testing and validating pre-production Front-End, Low Voltage, and connection boards. You will coordinate quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) activities and support the integration of electronics boards into RPC detectors. Additionally, you will participate in QA/QC testing of fully equipped chambers and debug any problematic chambers. Your role will also encompass supporting the installation of new chambers in the ATLAS experiment, coordinating testing before and after installation, acting as the main contact between the RPC project and Technical Coordination during installation, and coordinating detector commissioning after installation.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Physics or a related field. Strong experience in the design, debugging, and operations of fast electronics boards for gaseous detectors is essential. Demonstrated experience in operating and commissioning gaseous detectors is required, along with knowledge of gas detectors physics. The ability to work effectively in small to medium-sized teams under a leadership role is crucial for this position.
Educational Background: A PhD in Physics or a closely related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered, ensuring that candidates have a strong foundation in the principles of physics and engineering as they relate to particle detection and electronics.
Experience: Candidates should have significant experience in the design, debugging, and operations of fast electronics boards specifically for gaseous detectors. This includes demonstrated experience in the commissioning and operation of gaseous detectors, which is critical for the successful execution of the responsibilities associated with this role.

Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The job requires working 40 hours per week, fully onsite, and may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required. The job grade is 6-7, and a valid driving license is necessary for certain tasks.
