Job Overview: The Accountant position at FHI 360 is crucial for maintaining the financial integrity of the organization’s operations in Cameroon. Reporting to the Senior Finance Officer, the Accountant is responsible for a variety of accounting functions, including the recording, classification, examination, and analysis of financial transactions. This role involves reviewing and consolidating financial reports on a monthly basis, processing journal entries, managing cash receipts, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. The Accountant will also participate in audits and assist in training staff on financial processes. The position requires a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the OHADA accounting framework, as well as knowledge of Cameroonian tax laws. The Accountant will play a key role in supporting the organization’s mission to provide life-saving services in the health sector, particularly in the context of HIV prevention and treatment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Accountant will independently apply accounting principles to various functions, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost accounting. Key responsibilities include reviewing and consolidating financial reports for month-end closings, ensuring accurate account report preparation, and maintaining subsidiary ledgers. The Accountant will demonstrate mastery of GAAP and OHADA standards, manage tax filings, and support VAT recovery processes. Additional duties include preparing annual financial statements, reconciling sub-recipients with General Ledger accounts, and participating in internal and external audits. The Accountant will analyze financial data to identify cost-saving opportunities and monitor regulatory developments to ensure compliance with legislative changes. The role also involves developing and operating accounting control systems and preparing reports that require interpretation and analysis.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a thorough knowledge of financial management, investment capital, risk analysis, and legal compliance within the non-profit sector. Proficiency in GAAP, OHADA accounting framework, and internal control fundamentals is essential. Strong analytical, quantitative, and organizational skills are required, along with critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The ability to analyze financial data, identify errors, and prepare comprehensive financial reports is crucial for success in this role. Fluency in both French and English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences and an understanding of the sociopolitical context in which they operate.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's Degree or its international equivalent in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding complex financial systems and accounting practices relevant to the non-profit sector.
Experience: Typically, candidates should have a minimum of 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a public accounting firm, non-governmental organization (NGO), or large company. Experience working in NGOs is required, and familiarity with operating in insecure environments is preferred. Prior experience in a team lead role is also advantageous, as it demonstrates leadership capabilities and the ability to guide others in financial matters.
Languages: Fluency in French and English is required for this position. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication within the organization and with external stakeholders, particularly in a multicultural environment where both languages are commonly used.
Additional Notes: The position is based in Yaounde, Cameroon, and is expected to require less than 10% travel. The expected hiring salary range for this role is XAF 8,500,000 - 11,000,000 for annual gross salary for national local hire.
