Job Overview:

The intern will work under the supervision of a Human Rights Officer and will be expected to assist in monitoring human rights developments, particularly in the Central Africa region. Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of duties including:
  • Assisting in the follow-up of human rights issues and cases in accordance with treaty body mechanisms and special procedures.
  • Preparing a monthly review that summarizes the human rights situation in the assigned region for inclusion in the office's monthly report.
  • Overseeing the maintenance and development of the office's information and resource tools, including updating and producing necessary materials.
  • Contributing to the preparation of internal and external reports regarding the work of the Central Africa Regional Office.
  • Attending meetings and conferences as requested, taking detailed notes for future reference.
  • Assisting in organizing workshops and activities related to the office's work.
  • Familiarizing oneself with human rights mechanisms, conventions, and procedures of the Human Rights Council.
  • Conducting political and legal analyses on topics relevant to the Central Africa Regional Office, such as statelessness and the rights of migrant domestic workers.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the following qualifications: a) Enrollment in or completion of a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, such as a Master’s degree or higher, including Ph.D. or postgraduate degree). b) Enrollment in or completion of the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes either being currently enrolled in or having completed a graduate program, such as a Master's degree or higher, or being in the final year of a Bachelor's degree program. This ensures that candidates have a solid academic foundation in relevant fields such as human rights, international relations, law, or social sciences.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in human rights issues and a willingness to learn. Any previous internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to human rights, international law, or social justice will be considered an asset, as they indicate a commitment to the field and relevant skills.

Languages:
Fluency in English or French is required for this position, as these are the primary working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of the other language is desirable, as it enhances communication and collaboration within the office and with external stakeholders.
