Job Overview: The National Communication Specialist will play a crucial role in coordinating and leading the implementation of the FAO Representation’s Communication strategy in China. This position is vital for enhancing the visibility of FAO’s work and supporting the Member’s contributions towards achieving global, regional, and national objectives related to poverty and hunger elimination, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The incumbent will be responsible for promoting FAO’s corporate image through mass media and outreach channels, targeting a diverse audience that includes policymakers, technical experts, students, academia, NGOs, and the general public. The role requires a strategic approach to communication, ensuring that FAO’s messages are effectively conveyed and that the organization is positioned as a leading authority in food and agriculture.
Duties and Responsibilities: The National Communication Specialist will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including: supporting the implementation of the FAO China Communication Strategy; forming and maintaining strategic partnerships with media networks; developing digital assets in line with FAO’s global messages; managing thematic and regional social media channels; advocating for FAO’s mandates; providing technical support for communication plans related to key campaigns; preparing and disseminating press releases; strengthening media relations; monitoring the FAOCN website; identifying and liaising with digital influencers; creating and maintaining a national media database; tracking media reports involving FAO; identifying training needs in communications; assisting in communication work for FAO DPRK; and ensuring compliance with FAO standards and clearance processes for communication materials.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, television production, or other relevant fields. They should have at least three years of relevant experience in communication, journalism, media engagement, or public relations. A working knowledge of both English and Chinese is essential, and candidates must be nationals of China or residents with a valid work permit. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in managing online social platforms, a good understanding of strategic communication, and solid skills in both written and visual communication.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as journalism, communications, public relations, or television production. This foundational education is critical for understanding the principles of effective communication and media engagement, which are essential for the role of National Communication Specialist.
Experience: Candidates are expected to have a minimum of three years of relevant experience in communication, journalism, media engagement, or public relations. This experience should include substantial work in news reporting, newsgathering, and writing for major national or international news outlets. Proven experience in networking with local media and providing communication support for events and social media platforms is also required.
Languages: The mandatory languages for this position are English and Chinese, as effective communication in both languages is crucial for engaging with diverse stakeholders and promoting FAO’s work.
