Interns will have the opportunity to work in a hybrid model, which allows for a combination of in-person work in New York and remote work. This role is crucial in supporting the coordination of a network for uniformed women peacekeepers, which aims to facilitate peer exchange and learning through various online platforms, events, and resources. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that contribute to the broader goals of the UN, particularly in enhancing gender parity within peacekeeping operations.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a range of duties that support the implementation of gender parity strategies for uniformed personnel in UN peacekeeping. Key responsibilities include:
Supporting the conceptualization, organization, and execution of online and in-person events and meetings.
Assisting in drafting, formatting, and editing reports, communication materials, and other written products.
Creating and maintaining an online information repository to facilitate access to resources.
Collecting, analyzing, and visualizing both quantitative and qualitative information relevant to gender parity efforts.
Attending events, meetings, and seminars, and providing insights through detailed meeting notes.
Conducting research on a wide range of topics and synthesizing information for reports and presentations.
Implementing activities that align with the Office's efforts to promote gender parity strategies for both civilian and uniformed personnel.
Performing other duties as required to support the overall mission of the department.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (Master's degree, Ph.D., or equivalent); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and possess a commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, applicants should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions. Computer literacy in standard word processing and spreadsheet software applications is also required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in or completion of a graduate program or the final year of a bachelor's degree program. Relevant fields of study include public policy, strategy design and project management, marketing, business/public administration, political science, information management, public relations, communication/journalism, or data analysis and visualization. Candidates must provide proof of their educational status as part of the application process.
Experience: While professional work experience is not a prerequisite for this internship, candidates are expected to have relevant coursework or academic experience that aligns with the internship's focus. This may include projects or studies related to gender issues, peacekeeping, or international relations. The UN seeks candidates who can demonstrate their understanding of the UN's mission and their ability to contribute to its objectives through their academic background.
Languages: Fluency in English is required as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language. Familiarity with other official UN languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish is considered desirable but not mandatory.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and candidates are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns are expected to work full-time (35 hours per week), although part-time arrangements (20 hours per week) may be considered for shorter periods. The internship is designed to be flexible, allowing for a combination of in-person and remote work. The UN is committed to achieving gender balance and encourages female candidates to apply.
