Job Overview: The Political Affairs Officer position within the DPO is crucial for the formulation and implementation of political strategies in conflict-affected regions. The incumbent will engage in discussions to develop political and technical strategies, monitor and assess political trends, and analyze events that may impact peace operations. This role requires the preparation of analytical reports and correspondence for senior UN officials, as well as regular engagement with various UN departments and international organizations to coordinate efforts and provide policy recommendations. The officer will also be responsible for maintaining up-to-date information on political matters and ensuring effective communication and collaboration across different sectors of the UN and with member states.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Political Affairs Officer will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including: participating in discussions to formulate political strategies; reviewing and monitoring activities in assigned regions; analyzing political events and trends; preparing analytical reports on electoral matters; drafting notes, background papers, and correspondence for senior officials; coordinating with other UN departments and international organizations; providing recommendations on political matters; acting as a focal point for information collection and analysis; maintaining contacts with relevant offices and member states; and performing administrative functions related to staffing and budgeting for operations. The officer will also be expected to carry out special assignments as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in political science, international relations, law, or a related field. The position requires advanced analytical skills, the ability to propose solutions to complex political issues, and a deep understanding of the interplay between political, social, economic, and humanitarian factors in conflict zones. The officer should demonstrate professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is critical for understanding the complexities of international relations and peace operations.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, conflict resolution, or a related area is required. Additionally, at least three years of experience working in a front office providing substantive policy advice and support to senior UN officials or a comparable international organization is necessary. Experience in peacekeeping operations, particularly in Africa and another region, is also required, along with experience in coordinating budget preparation, which is desirable.
Languages: The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French, both of which are required for this position. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency at UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for both languages. Knowledge of Spanish is considered desirable, and proficiency in this language can enhance a candidate's qualifications.
Additional Notes: This position is financed with extra-budgetary resources for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds.
