The EBRD's mission is to foster the transition towards open market-oriented economies and to promote private and entrepreneurial initiative in countries from Central Europe to Central Asia. The organization operates in over 30 countries, employing a diverse workforce that reflects a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. The EBRD is committed to sustainability, equality, and digital transformation, ensuring that its operations have a positive impact on the regions it invests in.
Job Overview: As a Principal Technical Architect, you will play a strategic and hands-on role in designing the next generation of enterprise platforms and services. This position requires close collaboration with both business and technology teams to transform complex challenges into scalable solutions that deliver real value. You will be responsible for leading the architecture and delivery of complex enterprise solutions, guiding projects from early concept through to successful production deployment. Your expertise will help shape technology decisions and drive best practices across the organization, ensuring that the architecture aligns with the long-term ambitions of the EBRD. This role offers the opportunity to influence modern architecture, cloud technologies, and distributed systems, making a significant impact on the organization's growth and innovation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the architecture and delivery of complex enterprise solutions, owning technical design from concept through to production deployment.
Design and evolve microservices-based architectures, including domain decomposition and service boundary definition.
Apply Domain Driven Design (DDD) principles to model business domains, define bounded contexts, and create scalable, maintainable service ecosystems.
Design robust integration solutions using both synchronous and asynchronous communication patterns.
Shape API-first architectures leveraging REST APIs, GraphQL, API gateways, messaging platforms, and event streaming technologies.
Define data ownership, persistence, and integration strategies across distributed systems and enterprise platforms.
Partner closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, engineering teams, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into practical architectural solutions.
Guide development teams through implementation, ensuring solutions remain aligned with architectural principles, quality standards, and business objectives.
Drive adoption of cloud-native architecture patterns across applications, integrations, and digital platforms. 1
Evaluate emerging technologies, tools, and engineering practices, including AI-assisted software development capabilities.
Required Qualifications:
Proven experience as a Technical Architect delivering multiple projects end-to-end, from architecture design through to successful production implementation.
Extensive experience architecting large-scale microservices-based solutions within complex enterprise environments.
Strong expertise in Domain Driven Design (DDD), including bounded contexts, aggregates, domain modelling, and service decomposition.
Expert-level knowledge of enterprise integration architecture, including both synchronous and asynchronous integration patterns.
Hands-on experience with modern integration technologies such as REST APIs, GraphQL, API gateways, messaging platforms, and event streaming solutions (e.g., Kafka, Azure Event Hubs, or equivalent).
Strong data modelling skills with experience defining data ownership, persistence strategies, and integration approaches across distributed systems.
Significant software engineering background, including hands-on development experience in Java, .NET, or a comparable backend technology.
Experience working across the full software delivery lifecycle, from design through implementation and production support.
Strong understanding of modern cloud platforms, with experience on Azure preferred, although AWS or GCP experience will also be considered. 1
Knowledge of cloud-native architecture patterns including containers, orchestration platforms, managed messaging services, and observability tooling. 1
Ability to communicate effectively across audiences, from highly technical engineering teams to business stakeholders and product leaders. 1
Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to explain architectural decisions, trade-offs, and recommendations clearly and appropriately for different audiences.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in architecture or cloud technologies are preferred and may enhance your candidacy.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in technical architecture roles, particularly in delivering complex enterprise solutions. A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in software engineering and architecture is typically expected, with a proven track record of successful project delivery in a technical leadership capacity.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to the EBRD's operational regions, would be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: This position is a fixed-term contract lasting for 3 years. The role is full-time and may involve hybrid working arrangements, with a preference for in-person collaboration at least three days a week.
