Job Overview:
The Economic Affairs Officer plays a crucial role in analyzing economic trends and policies that impact trade, investment, finance, and sustainable development. This position requires the development of socio-economic databases and qualitative information to monitor the effects of economic shocks on a global or regional scale. The officer will interpret and adapt econometric models to analyze trends and relationships, draft technical papers, and prepare inputs for reports and presentations. The role also involves attending international meetings to gather information and engage in discussions with colleagues from various institutions, thereby contributing to the intergovernmental support function of UNCTAD.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: developing socio-economic databases, conducting economic or sector analysis, interpreting econometric models, drafting technical papers, identifying and analyzing policy proposals, attending international meetings, preparing speeches and presentations, and providing inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies. Additionally, the officer will perform administrative tasks necessary for the delivery of the work unit’s services and engage in training activities to enhance professional skills.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong foundation in economic theories and concepts, particularly as they relate to sustainable development. The ability to conduct independent research and analyze data from various sources is essential. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. A commitment to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work is also required.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background ensures that candidates have the necessary theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to perform effectively in this role.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, or related areas is required. Candidates should have experience with quantitative research on trade policy and development, as well as familiarity with trade databases and quantitative analysis using software such as Stata and R. Experience in producing analyses on the effects of economic shocks and working in international organizations is desirable, along with skills in research communication and data visualization.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in English is required, while knowledge of French and Spanish is considered desirable. Candidates must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English, and a good level in French and Spanish is advantageous.
