Job Overview:
The position of Associate Director/Senior Environmental and Social Advisor is a critical role within the Environment and Sustainability Department at EBRD, specifically within the Infrastructure team. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and managing the environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of various infrastructure projects, particularly in sectors such as transport, water, and waste management. This role requires extensive experience in Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and due diligence processes, as well as a deep understanding of international financial institutions (IFIs) and their environmental and social frameworks. The Associate Director will work closely with senior management and other departments to ensure compliance with the Bank's Environmental and Social Policy, while also contributing to the development of strategies and methodologies that enhance the Bank's sustainability objectives. The position demands a proactive approach to identifying and addressing complex environmental and social issues, ensuring that projects not only meet regulatory requirements but also contribute to sustainable development goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Director will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: managing and overseeing complex and high-risk projects, providing specialist input on environmental and social risks, and ensuring compliance with the Bank's Environmental and Social Policy. The role involves conducting thorough assessments of projects, identifying gaps in compliance, and developing solutions to mitigate risks. The Associate Director will also be responsible for liaising with various stakeholders, including clients, consultants, and internal teams, to negotiate contract terms and ensure effective communication throughout the project lifecycle. Additionally, the Associate Director will represent ESD at various meetings and forums, contribute to capacity-building initiatives, and mentor junior staff. The position requires a commitment to continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures, as well as a focus on data management and reporting related to sustainability.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, along with a proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks. Knowledge of international environmental and social standards, such as those set by the EBRD and IFC, is essential. The ideal candidate will have strong project management skills, with experience leading multidisciplinary teams and delivering solutions in complex environments. Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and effective time management are crucial for success in this role. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in English, and the ability to engage with senior stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental science, social science, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or professional certifications in environmental management or sustainability would be advantageous. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their understanding of environmental and social issues, as well as the regulatory frameworks that govern them.

Experience:
The position requires extensive experience in environmental and social risk assessment, particularly in the context of high-risk infrastructure projects. Candidates should have a minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience, ideally within an international financial institution or a similar environment. Experience working with complex projects categorized as high-risk under multilateral development banks' policies is highly desirable. Proven experience in stakeholder engagement and negotiation is also essential, as is a track record of mentoring and developing junior staff.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent written and spoken communication skills. Familiarity with the languages of the EBRD's countries of operation is considered advantageous, and for positions based in resident offices, local language fluency will be required.
