Job Overview: The Economic Affairs Officer position is located within the Macroeconomic Analysis, Institutions & Economic Governance Section (MIGS) of the Macroeconomics, Finance, Governance and Planning Division (MFGPD) at ECA. The role involves contributing to the Division's analytical, normative, and operational work through policy research, technical advisory services, and capacity development. The incumbent will support African member states in strengthening macroeconomic management, economic governance, public finance, and development finance. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying economic issues, conducting studies, and formulating policy recommendations. The officer will also engage in intergovernmental support, technical cooperation, and provide substantive support on economic issues to various bodies, representing the organization at meetings and organizing expert group discussions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for monitoring economic developments, designing and conducting studies, interpreting econometric models, and drafting reports. The officer will develop policy recommendations, formulate proposals for development strategies, and attend international meetings to discuss economic issues. Responsibilities also include providing substantive support to intergovernmental bodies, designing and monitoring technical cooperation projects, conducting training seminars, and supporting junior staff. The officer will collect and analyze macroeconomic data, prepare presentations, and perform various administrative tasks necessary for the delivery of the work unit’s services. The role requires collaboration with colleagues and participation in broader departmental undertakings.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of economic theories and concepts, with the ability to conduct independent research and analyze data. The role requires excellent organizational skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a team, and a commitment to gender perspectives in economic development. The officer should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a strong work ethic, with the ability to remain calm under pressure and manage multiple priorities effectively.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Additional qualifications in data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs are considered advantageous.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, and application of economic principles in development programs is required. Experience in macroeconomic analysis and economic governance in developing countries is desirable. A proven track record of publications in international academic journals or policy-oriented papers is also desirable, along with experience in data analytics or related fields.
Languages: Fluency in English or French is required, with knowledge of the other language being desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage. Candidates must meet the minimum required levels for reading, writing, listening, and speaking in these languages according to the UN Language Framework.
