Job Overview: The Roving Mental Health and psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Officer plays a crucial role in enhancing the integration and expansion of mental health services within Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). This position is designed for a professional who will focus on building the capacity of clinical officers to deliver high-quality mental health consultations. The officer will work to improve the uptake of mental health services and ensure continuity of care through structured follow-up and case management. The role requires the officer to rotate between two counties, providing technical support, mentorship, and supervision to field teams. The officer will also be responsible for reviewing complex mental health cases, conducting regular performance review meetings, and strengthening referral and follow-up systems for mental health patients. This position is vital in ensuring that mental health services are effectively delivered and that patients receive the necessary support and care.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Roving MHPSS Officer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Providing technical support to clinical officers in delivering mental health consultations in accordance with mhGAP and national guidelines.
Conducting on-the-job training, mentorship, and supportive supervision of clinical staff on MHPSS services.
Reviewing critical and complex mental health cases and guiding appropriate case management and referrals.
Supporting diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care for patients with mental health conditions.
Conducting weekly meetings with clinical officers to review progress, challenges, and performance of mental health activities.
Ensuring proper documentation and reporting of mental health consultations and activities.
Strengthening referral pathways between community, MMUs, and higher-level care for mental health cases.
Supporting follow-up of mental health patients in collaboration with community health workers and outreach teams.
Promoting community awareness and acceptance of mental health services to improve service uptake. 1
Monitoring the quality of MHPSS services and ensuring adherence to standards and protocols. 1
Supporting the integration of MHPSS into primary healthcare services at MMUs. 1
Participating in program planning, data review, and reporting activities. 1
Ensuring respect, dignity, and confidentiality of all patients and caregivers. 1
Rotating between two assigned counties to ensure consistent technical support across locations. 1
Performing any other duties as assigned from time to time.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in clinical medicine or a related field, with extended work experience in the mental health domain within humanitarian settings. Additionally, training in mhGAP or other recognized mental health intervention approaches is essential. Candidates must possess strong clinical knowledge in mental health case management and proven experience in training and mentoring healthcare workers. Good spoken and written English is mandatory, while fluency in Arabic and local languages is considered an added advantage. The ability to work independently and under minimal supervision, along with strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, is also required. Candidates should be capable of working under difficult and remote field conditions.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in clinical medicine or a related field. Additional training in mhGAP or other recognized mental health intervention approaches is highly desirable, as it equips the candidate with the necessary skills to address mental health issues effectively in humanitarian settings.
Experience: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in mental health and psychosocial support programs is required. Experience working in humanitarian or low-resource settings is highly desirable, as it provides the candidate with the necessary context and understanding of the challenges faced in such environments. Proven experience in training and mentoring healthcare workers is also essential, as the role involves capacity building within the team.
Languages: Good spoken and written English is mandatory for this position. Fluency in Arabic and local languages is considered an added advantage, as it enhances communication with patients and community members, thereby improving service delivery and acceptance of mental health services.
