Job Overview: The Driver and Protocol Clerk position is crucial for providing reliable and safe driving services to the UN Women Special Representative to the Africa Union and UNECA, as well as other UN officials and visitors. The role demands a high level of discretion, integrity, and responsibility, along with excellent knowledge of protocol and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security issues. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate a client-oriented approach, courtesy, confidentiality, and the ability to work with individuals from diverse national and cultural backgrounds. In addition to driving responsibilities, the Driver and Protocol Clerk will perform various standard protocol and administrative processes, ensuring high quality and accuracy in their work. The position may also require providing driving services to operations and program personnel, consultants, experts, and UN staff on mission, highlighting the need for flexibility and adaptability in the role.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Driver and Protocol Clerk will be responsible for a range of duties, including:
Providing reliable and secure driving services for the transport of UN Women officials, visitors, and program personnel, facilitating VIP missions as needed.
Delivering and collecting mail, documents, and other items to various government offices, embassies, and UN offices.
Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, assisting with visa and customs formalities when required.
Ensuring all passengers wear seatbelts and adhering to safety regulations in case of accidents.
Maintaining accurate vehicle logs, including odometer readings, fuel purchases, and maintenance records.
Conducting routine checks and minor repairs on the assigned vehicle, ensuring it is in safe running condition.
Maintaining all required documents and supplies in the vehicle, including insurance and registration.
Providing general administrative and logistical support in accordance with UN Women rules and host country protocol, including document delivery and official visit arrangements.
Assisting in the processing of diplomatic identity cards, driving licenses, and vehicle registrations. 1
Performing other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.
Required Qualifications: The position requires the following qualifications:
Completion of secondary education is mandatory.
A valid driver’s license is essential.
Defensive driving certification is considered an asset.
At least 3 years of relevant experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy, or UN system with a proven safe driving record.
Demonstrated experience in maintaining accurate vehicle and fuel logs, supporting audit and accountability requirements.
Experience working with government partners is desirable.
Proficiency in using computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is required.
Educational Background: Candidates must have completed secondary education. A valid driver’s license is required for this position, and having a defensive driving certification is advantageous.
Experience: The ideal candidate should possess at least 3 years of relevant experience as a driver within an international organization, embassy, or UN system, showcasing a safe driving record. Experience in administrative, logistical, and protocol support services is essential, along with a demonstrated ability to maintain accurate vehicle and fuel logs that comply with audit and accountability standards. Familiarity with government operations is a plus, and proficiency in using computer applications is necessary.
Languages: The position requires a working knowledge of English and fluency in Amharic. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is desirable but not mandatory.
