Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer Education Specialist will be an integral part of UNICEF’s Global Education Practice Team, based in the Nairobi Center of Excellence. The specialist will work on evidence-based planning, strategic partnerships, and advocacy to ensure that every child, particularly the most marginalized and vulnerable, has access to quality and inclusive education. The position emphasizes the importance of integrating education with other sectors such as health, nutrition, and child protection, thereby advancing cross-sectoral work that supports comprehensive child development. The specialist will also contribute to the effective functioning of the Equity, Disability, Gender, and Inclusion (EDGI) pillar, which includes conducting research on the impact of inequity in foundational learning and the evolution of inequalities in education.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UN Volunteer Education Specialist will be responsible for providing technical support to Country Offices in addressing challenges related to out-of-school children and promoting equity and inclusion in education. Key responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the effective functioning of the EDGI pillar, including planned research on inequity in foundational learning and learning outcomes.
  • Participating in the UNICEF Internal Coordination Group on School Health and Wellbeing, contributing to the development of the UNICEF Programme Guidance and the Investment Case on School Health and Wellbeing.
  • Advancing cross-sectoral initiatives that integrate education with health, nutrition, WASH, child protection, and social protection.
  • Engaging in advocacy efforts to promote equitable access to education for marginalized groups.
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance the impact of UNICEF's educational programs globally.
  • Performing any other tasks that contribute to UNICEF's mission of promoting equity and inclusion in education.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of education systems, particularly in relation to equity and inclusion. They should demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders, showcasing excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A commitment to UNICEF's mission and values is essential, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation in educational practices. Familiarity with data analysis and research methodologies related to education is highly desirable, as is experience in advocacy and policy development in the education sector.

Educational Background:

Experience:

Languages:
