Job Overview: The International Consultant on Governance, Peace and Security will play a crucial role in supporting UN Women’s mission by maintaining up-to-date knowledge of regional developments related to women's human rights, governance, and peace and security. This position requires integrating this information into policy development, analysis, outreach, and advocacy efforts, with a strong focus on an intersectional approach that includes disability inclusion. The consultant will collaborate with UN Women Offices in Asia and the Pacific, UN Country Teams, and various stakeholders to support national, regional, and global analysis and reporting on gender equality and women's empowerment. The consultant will also be responsible for preparing briefing notes, background papers, and summaries for senior management, and will engage with marginalized communities to ensure that diverse perspectives are incorporated into initiatives. This role is essential for advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda and supporting women leaders and organizations in their participation and influence in governance processes.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will undertake a variety of tasks, including:
Maintaining current knowledge of regional developments on women’s human rights, governance, and peace and security, and integrating this information into policy development and advocacy efforts.
Supporting UN Women Offices in Asia and the Pacific and collaborating with UN Country Teams and human rights mechanisms to analyze and report on gender equality and women's empowerment.
Participating in UN meetings related to early warning systems linked to human rights and prevention.
Coordinating joint activities with stakeholders in governance and peace and security, including UN agencies and civil society.
Providing guidance and support to UN Women Country Offices in developing and implementing programs focused on human rights and governance.
Preparing necessary documents for senior management, including briefing notes and summaries.
Engaging with marginalized communities to ensure inclusivity in consultations and initiatives.
Establishing relationships with key stakeholders from civil society and regional organizations.
Submitting monthly progress reports detailing work completed and outputs finalized.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s Degree or equivalent in law, human rights, international development, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in similar fields combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate excellent analytical and writing skills, strong interpersonal skills, and effective communication abilities with staff at all levels of the organization.
Educational Background: A Master’s Degree or equivalent in law, human rights, international development, or a related field is required for this position. In cases where candidates hold a first-level university degree in similar fields, they must also have two additional years of qualifying experience to be considered equivalent to the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience at the national or international level in areas related to human rights, gender equality, and Women, Peace and Security. Experience collaborating with diverse women-led civil society organizations, including Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and youth organizations, is essential. Familiarity with the UN System for Asia and the Pacific is considered an asset, along with proven report writing experience in English.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as the consultant will be required to produce written reports and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This consultancy is home-based, and for any required travel, costs and Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) will be provided according to UN Women travel policy. The consultant will report to the Regional Policy Advisor on Governance, Peace and Security and is expected to adhere to UN Women’s policies and procedures, including a zero-tolerance policy on misconduct.
