Job Overview:
The Protection Assistant – Monitoring plays a crucial role in the implementation of protection monitoring activities in selected IDP/refugee sites and host communities in Dabat, Ethiopia. This position is under the line management of the protection team leader and receives technical supervision from the Protection Specialist – Monitoring. The primary focus of this role is to conduct regular protection monitoring visits, collect and encode data, identify and refer individuals at risk, and report on emerging protection risks and trends. The Protection Assistant will also be responsible for identifying and providing direct assistance to people with specific needs and supporting the implementation of other protection activities carried out by DRC in the designated project locations. This role requires a proactive approach to understanding and addressing the protection needs of vulnerable populations, ensuring that all activities are conducted in line with DRC's protection principles and standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Assistant – Monitoring will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to: conducting protection monitoring in assigned areas, contributing to the development and review of protection monitoring tools, identifying protection trends and needs through various methods such as Key Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions, utilizing data collection systems for data collection and uploading, identifying individuals at risk and providing information and referrals for specialized assistance, supporting the coordination and implementation of Individual Protection Assistance, regularly monitoring beneficiaries’ access to services, collaborating with Community Based Protection Networks (CBPN) to raise awareness about protection risks, ensuring data is collected in accordance with Protection Information Management standards, participating in relevant trainings, adhering to ethical data collection protocols, documenting activities for verification of project progress, and contributing to protection monitoring reports and analyses.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of one year’s experience in an entry to mid-level position within the humanitarian response sector, specifically in refugee or IDP protection, preferably with an international NGO, UN agency, or relevant local authority. Experience in conducting protection monitoring or assessments using online data collection tools such as Kobo and Activity Info is essential. Strong data collection, analysis, and reporting skills are required, along with experience working with displaced or conflict-affected populations. Candidates should demonstrate strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Integrity and a strong work ethic are crucial, as is the ability to meet deadlines under pressure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, is mandatory, and familiarity with data collection and analysis tools is desirable.

Educational Background:
A university degree or diploma in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses that enhance the candidate's qualifications may also be beneficial.

Experience:
The position requires at least one year of relevant experience in a humanitarian context, particularly in roles focused on protection for refugees or internally displaced persons. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to engage with vulnerable populations and understand the complexities of protection issues in conflict-affected areas.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory. Proficiency in local languages is also required, as it facilitates effective communication with the communities served.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is for a duration of 10 months, classified as a National Contract under Band I2, which is a non-management designation. The designated duty station is Dabat, Ethiopia, with a start date of August 1, 202
