Duties and Responsibilities:
The UK Director will lead HRW’s advocacy initiatives in the UK, developing and implementing strategies that address both foreign policy and domestic human rights issues. Key responsibilities include promoting HRW’s work to influence decision-makers, maintaining regular contact with key government officials, and representing HRW at public events and seminars. The Director will collaborate with HRW colleagues globally to identify advocacy opportunities and will work closely with the UK Senior Media Officer to enhance HRW’s media presence. Additionally, the Director will build relationships with donors and civil society partners, contribute to internal HRW policies, and provide political analysis on the UK’s human rights policies. The role also involves overseeing the London office, ensuring effective communication and support for staff, and managing office governance matters.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a graduate degree in international relations, journalism, law, social sciences, or equivalent work experience. A minimum of ten years of policy advocacy experience is required, including at least four years in a management role. Candidates should have substantial knowledge of UK government ministries and agencies, along with direct experience in policy advocacy. A strong commitment to human rights, excellent political judgment, and effective public speaking and writing skills in English are essential. The ability to work under pressure, attention to detail, and strong coordination skills are also necessary for success in this role.

Educational Background:
The position requires a graduate degree in a relevant field such as international relations, journalism, law, or social sciences. Equivalent work experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. The educational background should provide a solid foundation for understanding complex human rights issues and the political landscape in which HRW operates.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of experience in policy advocacy, with a minimum of four years in a management capacity.
