Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is situated within the Aeronautical Meteorology/Environment section of the ICAO Eastern and Southern Africa (ESAF) Regional Office. The primary focus of this internship is to support the implementation of ICAO’s environmental protection and climate change objectives, particularly in the context of aviation decarbonisation and the transition to cleaner energy sources. The intern will engage in various regional initiatives aimed at reducing international aviation emissions and enhancing State capacity to promote sustainable aviation solutions. This role provides hands-on exposure to Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) development, State Action Plans (SAPs) for CO₂ emissions reduction, and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). The intern will also support efforts related to other cleaner aviation energy solutions and environmental innovations relevant to the African aviation context.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a range of tasks under the supervision of the Regional Officer: Aeronautical Meteorology/Environment. Key responsibilities include supporting regional Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) activities under the ACT-SAF Programme, assisting with the development and updating of State Action Plans (SAPs) on CO₂ emissions reduction, and contributing to the implementation of CORSIA, including its Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system. The intern will also engage in research on emerging cleaner aviation energy solutions, assist in organizing workshops and meetings, prepare technical documents, and coordinate with States, industry stakeholders, and regional partners. Additionally, the intern will support the preparation of ICAO inputs for activities and events of other regional organizations, develop outreach and communication materials, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a degree programme (first-level university degree or higher) in a field related to aviation, environmental science, climate or atmospheric sciences, renewable or cleaner energy, or other closely related technical disciplines. While no prior work experience is required, applicants should possess academic training, education, advanced coursework, or relevant skills that would benefit the ICAO ESAF Region during the internship.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes being enrolled in or having completed a degree programme in relevant fields such as aviation, environmental science, climate or atmospheric sciences, renewable or cleaner energy, or other closely related technical disciplines. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of aviation's environmental impacts and the strategies for mitigating them.
Experience: This internship does not require prior work experience, making it an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field. Languages: Fluent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English are essential for this position. Additionally, a working knowledge of a second language of the Organization, such as French, is desirable and would enhance the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the organization.
Additional Notes: Interns will receive a stipend during their internship, but they will be responsible for all costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses. The internship duration is six months, and interns are expected to work full-time, five days a week. During the internship, interns are not permitted to engage in any other form of employment within ICAO. They are expected to carry out their assigned duties with loyalty, discretion, and conscience, adhering to the official instructions issued by the Organization.
